Christmas 2 years ago i was plague by a mysterious facial swelling. it started off as an eyelid swelling, a lip, swelling. but no matter what, the swelling would reduce to about 50% near the end of the day, and be full blown swelling when i wake up in the morning. it started in beggining of december, and reached it's peak of swelling on Christmas day. it got so bad i could hardly see, and i didn't go any where cause i looked like Frankenstein and and the blob's love child. then when they doctors can finally get me in for an MRI (which is a miracle they can schedule one in 2 weeks) on the 27th, it's all better and hey detect nothing.

last Christmas nothing happened, but yesterday, my eyelid has swollen and this morning my lip.

i figured i might ask everyone for advice since doctors can't find anything. maybe i'm a 21st century scrooge and i need to be nicer, or i need to be less cheap with buying presents. anyway, thought people might find this amusing and feel better knowing your not the one with the worst christmas, lol. well, just pray for me, or wish me luck.

That's...bizarre! Hopefully it doesn't get too scary this year! You have no idea what causes this?

Swelling like that is very odd.....I know nothing of medicine, so take none of my ideas seriously, but I suppose it is possibly you have excess lymph pooling in your face. That could cause the swelling you describe...and it could disappear quickly, although not THAT quickly.

Hey BigNorm,
This might sound weird, but try to remember what type of food you ate roughly 6-12 hours before you had your swelling. I got hives last New Years after eating lobster, although I was never allergic to lobster in my life. I found that some seafood markets and seafood prep companies use an iodine-based spray during the freeze period. Nowadays, the spray is much more concentrated to preserve the seafood longer. I got the hives from that...and have gotten them the 3 times this year when I ate lobster that was frozen.

Also, a friend of mine only ate walnuts around the holidays. Last year, he blew up like a balloon after eating just one...and he never had that reaction before.

So, try to remember what you ate (or eat this year) to see if it may be the cause of your predicament.

SoftTcklr is right -- people often eat unaccustomed food around the holidays, and can suffer from bizarre allergic reactions, not to mention food poisoning if the food wasn't handled or stored correctly.

I have seen facial swelling like what you describe occur from severe food allergies. You might want to have skin sensitivity tests done by an allergy specialist if this becomes a frequent problem.

Best of luck,

true, i kinda figured it was an allergic reaction. i used to be allergic to grass pollen until some treatments fixed it. it might be the new plants that spring up in the cold winter.... but i'll find out on monday when i see the doctor.

not to mention 2 years ago i was working on a farm where they got loads of crazy stuff i might be allergic to. but to have it spring up now, away from any farms is also strange.

could be several things
(1) allergy to something
(2) blocked lymph drainage and pooling
(3) blocked blood vessel drainage and pooling
(4) other things that I wouldn't dare speculate on

Get seen by a physician so they can diagnose it and help treat it now AND prevent in future....am leaning towards the allery angle since it is happening about same time of the year

I might be speaking out of turn, but, do you have your Christmas tree up yet? If so, is it real? Maybe grass pollen and pine needles are as diffrent as apples and oranges. But, then again, maybe not. I doubt it's the cause. But it was just a thought.

well, some good news....

swelling is gone for now. the previous event of swelling happened a week or two before christmas, so i'm not outta the woods yet. swelling went away just in time for the doctor's appointment, which leads me to believe it's a highly intelligent alien bacteris for plans of world domination so, RUN AWAY!!!!! lol.

but thanks for the advice, i'll keep them in mind if it comes back.
