If you went back in time to the civil war would you be with the south or north and why.

In the uk we only have a very limited history taught , i would be tempted to go with the south because i always support the under dog, but i wouldn't want the slavery bit none of us would some of them didn't. i guess i have watched "gone with the wind too many times but still love it.

soon we will have gone with the old fart when i get banned from this very nice site for starting a controversial thread.

I'd do whatever I could to prevent the war from happening at all, because I hate Ken Burns documentaries! 😀

I heard that R.E. Lee freed his slaves before Lincoln did - can't remember where I read that, though.

The Civil War was pretty much horrible...from what I understand, it was one of the most brutal wars ever fought and one of the most traumatizing. I think the outcome was good and of course I'm glad slavery was abolished, I just wish we didn't have to traverse such a long, rough road to get there.

But, in response to your question, I would pick the North. One because I hate slavery (except maybe in sexual terms...) and segregation and all that stuff, and two because I like winning.

though the south did have a steady supply of Kentucky bourbon flowing through it...

Hmmmm, intriqueing question, I tend to side with the "Union Army" the war was to keep the south from setting up their government. As well as a war of abolition (to free the slaves) yes it was a horrific event - but by comparision, think of the gadgets man has developed since to kill and maim their fellow man.
(But the Confederate Grey uniforms are kind of flashy - the Union Army was overall navy blue)

I'd fight for the Union. Not really on the slavery issue because the South would have been forced to accept abolition anyway. I would have been living in Massachusetts which had been a free state for time. I would have been politically against slavery obviously, but the concept of war over slavery would have killed more people than it saved. As for the Confederacy and slavery, nobody worthwhile would have traded with them. Europe had ended their slavery and the North would have just forced the embargo.anyway. If I were transported back in time being who I am today I would have felt that Union was simply better for the people as a hole. If the Union were to fracture once it could fracture again then again and again with every dispute. The U.S. would have crumbled into fiefdoms and the ideals of the Founders totally lost.

Plus, the Union army uniform was far more snazzier.

The North because I hate slavery and racism and live in the North today(New YorK). The confederacy never died though, the South still hasn't accepted the lost the war, things are slow to change.

I know you probably didn't mean it this way, but I have to say, "the South" really isn't as racist and backwards as people make it out to be. Some people in the south are, certainly - mainly the older generations - but so are a lot of people in the North, and a lot of people in Australia, and Scotland, and Africa. We're all a little bit racist, as the song says. 😛 The south is no more racist than anywhere else I've been - they've just been tattooed with the stereotype of being robe-wearing cross-burning lunatics due to the actions of a minority.

Again, I know you probably didn't mean it to apply to the South as a whole, but I just feel like I need to point that out to everyone.

I would be fighting in the North, or at least supporting the North because I too disagree with slavery and racism and thought that the country should stay the USA and not break into two separate ones.

interesting question..i watched a mockumentary showing the world or the US today if the Conderacy had won..it was quite entertaining..

i had ancestors who fought on both sides..that was the type of war it was..brother against brother..ya i've been to Gettysburg 😛 and i like Ken Burns documentaries..i had rather a crush on that Foote historian person..

There is plenty of racism in the North especially New York.

Having grown up in Fort Worth, Texas; I would have fought for the South because that's who Texas fought with. I have had some great black friends. Where the south goofed was they should have freed the slaves, then fired on Fort Sumter. People in the south at that time saw slavery as a secondary issue, what they were really mad about was they felt like the banks and the factories in the north were shorting them on cotton and tobacco prices. They felt cutoff. If you really want to know something about the war, go and read the time life seires of books on it. They are really informative. That is, if anybody still reads books anymore besides me. Lol!

Knowing what we know now,I would have sat the war out What was so bloody civil about it?

o Zod i once started a thread on the TMF, asking why it was called civil, as there wasn't anything civil about a war as far as i could tell..however i had very interesting comments..mostly that the word "civil" in this context does not mean what civil usually means..

lol, funny you should mention that. what we were taught, at least in Florida, was that back in the day, the British were evil, but we kicked their asses and started our own country, and again in the war of 1812. then during WW1 and WW2, we came to Britain's rescue and pretty much pulled their butts outta the fire, and know we're buddy buddy. that what they taught in school. i don't agree with that of course, especially after my own research.

but for your question, being southern, i'd have to be a Confederate, of course against slavery, but if i tried the Union, they'd notice my southern accent and execute me as a southern spy.

Since I live in one of the 'border' states, I would have supported the Union.

What many forget is that the war was as much over state's rights vs. federal governtment and economic issues as it was about slavery. Still, I would have supported the Union cause
