Re: Format

Is there a reason for clips being in wmv format? Often that format requires a codec that only works with the most recent verson of Windows Media player. Which in turn requires an upgraded computer system - at minimum Windows 98. Why not just post in mpg or rm format?

I would think that to sell video one would want to post to the most common denominator - mpg or rm is a format everyone can access.

In my case, the reason for using wmv files is very simple: file size. Wmv files are significantly smaller than mpeg. I don't have software that would allow me to compress mpeg files to a reasonable size without sacrificing too much of the quality.

I see some rm sample clips out there that have very good quality and are of a reasonable size (though still larger than my own sample clips). But my problem is the same as with mpeg files: I simply don't have the software to make them. Well, I do, but the results are crappy and unwatchable.

Believe me, if it weren't for these software limitations, I would use mpeg or rm samples. It is kind of annoying to know that some PC users have trouble viewing the clips and that it's really not a good format for Mac users.

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the vast majority of PC users had at least Windows 98. Are there still many Windows 95 users out there? It's possible, it's just that I don't know any myself. I find it difficult to think of a computer running on Windows 98 as an upgraded computer system.

Thank you for your explanation.

You might think Win98 was an upgrade if your were still using Win95. 🙂-D

Mind you, I was speaking for myself, and not for Arvee and The Princess. But I assume their reasons are similar to mine, mainly a matter of file size.

Hmm, well, yeah, if one is still using Win95, Win98 can indeed seem like a significant improvement. But the harsh reality is that we're in 2003, and since Win95 there's been Win98, Win98SE, Win 2000 and ME, and now we have WinXP. Win95 users are probably a small minority, and unfortunately, Win95 is seriously outdated by today's standards.

If at all possible, I can only recommend that anyone still stuck with Win95 try to upgrade a bit (though of course that costs money, and so it's not always possible). It's just that one can't expect to use Win95 and have an easy time using some of the file formats used today. I know computer stuff becomes outdated frighteningly fast, but I'm afraid there isn't much we can do about it.

Still, if find it intriguing and somewhat encouraging that some people still manage to function with Win95 to some extent. It shows that one can last a fairly long time without upgrading all the time.

Size is indeed one reason that our clips are formatted in .wmv. Also, our clips are produced using Windows Movie Maker that uses .wmv as the default format. I'm a bit surprised myself that there are pc users that are still using Win95. I would imagine that at this point in time most are using at least Win98 or better. Realplayer One (a free download for the basic player...www.real.com) will also play wmv's if setup to make Realplayer the default player for that format. At setup it will give you the option of what types of files you would like to make Realplayer the default player for. Hope this helps.
