I just finished binging through this, and it's almost shockingly good. There's just the right amount of nostalgia, while still being mostly its own unique thing with its own message.

I don't want to give spoilers, but it completely subverted my expectations of what it was going to be, then it subverted my new expectations again about halfway through.

Even the acting is excellent, from the kids as well as the adults.

The thing that worries me about this series would be an attempt at revisionism. We've seen, since How I Met Your Mother's excellent subversive jokes, a flourish of videos that state that "Daniel is the real bully". I am seriously concerned about this.

Like any joke taken too far, it's not really funny, IMO. All I can say is that I hope the writers didn't go down that way. Otherwise I fear that Season 2 is really gonna be about how Mr Miyagi should have fought on the Japanese side during WWII 😱

Yeah, Daniel appears to have become arrogant. It sucks that Miyagi isn't alive anymore to whip him back into the right state of mind.

War is hell for both sides and an abomination altogether. Yes one side has to lose in the end and yes the Japanese did some terrible things but keep in mind Miyagi lost his family to the american fire bombing of Japanese cities (some of which housed populations close to several major American cities).

Again, I'm not trying to demonize amercian troops or defend Japanese war crimes, I'm trying to say that innocent on both sides lost so much. Because war is hell.
