The Socceroos added soccer to Australia's list of sporting victories over England with an historic 3-1 win at Upton Park tonight.
The Australians embarrassed a full-strength England side to lead 2-0 at halftime and then survived a scare from Sven-Goran Eriksson's second half side of young substitutes.
Tony Popovic put Australia into the lead after 17 minutes with a classy header while Harry Kewell, who defied club Leeds United to play for his country, extended the lead in the 42nd minute with some individual magic.
Both goalscorers were replaced early in the second half, Popovic by Tony Vidmar and Kewell by John Aloisi.
Francis Jeffers narrowed the gap midway through the second half, but Aloisi combined with Feyenoord midfielder Brett Emerton to put the Australians in command again in the 84th minute.
It was the Socceroos' first win over England in six matches, the first time the two countries had played on English soil and the Socceroos' first outing since the failed World Cup qualifiers 14 months ago.

The supposed best team England could put on the park was booed off the ground at halftime.
