I'm a comic book fan, but I am by no means a comic book collector. This thread is more concerned with comic book films, and what makes a good comic book movie.

This year, there have been several comic book films to come out. Sin City, Batman Begins, Fantastic 4....not forgetting Spiderman 2 which came out last year. Some of these films are better than others (I actually fell asleep during Fantastic 4, but loved Batman Begins) but generally, we have recently seen several great films come out which are based on comic books.

I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts on comic book based films/TV series are? Also, I will add trailers to films which are coming out soon...

Superman Returns Teaser (looks fantastic!)

Well, I'm not much of a comic book fan, but I am a big movie fan. Typically, I don't get into a lot of the comic book films, but Sin City and Batman Begins were both awesome films. I had not read the novels that Sin City came from, but the film was made well enough where you didn't really need to be familiar with the material. Batman Begins is probably the best superhero / comic book film I have ever seen as far as how well it was made, casting, etc.

I also liked Constantine a lot (I'm sure I'm in the minority there), and that was based on either a comic or graphic novel also, if I'm not mistaken.

A lot of times, it seems the studios don't really put enough effort in bringing comics to film, but maybe things are changing and they will continue to get better. I'll have to see what's slated to come out in 2006.

im anxiously lookin forward to the ghost rider and iron man movies comin, only oddly nicholas cage is ghost rider.

x-men 3 is comin out next year too.

I was mad bout constantine how they changed the storyline for movies....goin on that, i hate how the comics get mainstreamed for the retard mainstream. I was an avid collector till money made me have to stop. Also i may be in the minority but i felt the original batman movie blew away all comic movies, esp the resent one.

How Batman can't deal with a clown with a revolver, I'll never understand. The problem with the Batman series are the villians themselves. For all they're worth, they are pretty mundane and average and don't offer much of a challenge one on one.

It's different with Superman characters, etc. Because those characters have super powers to vanquish a super threat.

Batman is just like a detective and his foes don't have "powers". A veteran police officer with the right equippment could probably get the same results. The presense of Batman to deal with an average menace like Two-Face, Joker, Catwoman, and even Penguin, seems like overkill. Nothing a special, organized swat team couldn't handle.

In retrospect, a terrorist with a nuclear bomb is more dangerous than anyone Batman has faced and probably ever will. And all it took was for that terrorist to acquire the weopon in the first place. He didn't have to have a gimmick or string of crimes or robberies accredited to him or anything. All he needed was a hate for this country and the will to set off a bomb. Otherwise, he's some nobody.

You don't need to be a twisted clown to do that, just twisted.

But, alas, I guess thats the novalty of comic books and comic book characters. They want to give the hero something other than the average thug to deal with, and yet, alot of these villians end up doing average, thug-like things (like robbing banks and taking hostages.)

Its not like Magneto in X-Men, or Doomsday in Superman.

The Joker is literally a crazy man with a gun. And perhaps thats the beauty of it. LOL

I never really got into comics as a kid; weren't that popular in Hungary at the time. Having all these movies come out showed some things I've missed. For instance, Sin city and Fantastic 4, well, I've never heard of until I've seen the first previews. Spider Man, well, I've heard of, but never knew the story line. Its really Superman and Batman that were no supprise to me.

I guess I'm kinda lucky, because for me, these movies are ACUTALLY exciting, and I dunno what will happen exactly. (other than, of course, the good guys win in the end. 😛)

Well in reality Ra's Al Ghul really was like a middle eastern terrorist in the comic book. (I mean come on, Ra's Al Ghul is an arabic name!) But of course with todays political atmosphere they had to change that for the movie. I did like the way they did Scarecrow though.

My confidence in the new Superman movie was greatly increased when I heard that Kevin Spacey is playing Lex Luthor. He's like my favorite actor of all time. Personally I hope they do a Justice League movie at some point. That would kick ass. Rumor has it that DC is going to jump on the "action movies for kids" bandwagon like Spy Kids and Sharkboy & Lavagirl and are going to be doing a Teen Titans movie......god help us all. Also a new Conan the Barbarian movie called "King Conan: Crown of Iron" is also definitly in the works currently.

Also "announced" for production (which doesnt mean they are necessarily ever going to be made) are Sub-Mariner, The Darkness (which would be friggin awesome!) 30 Days of Night (an awesome vampire/undead based miniseries) Astro City, Captain America, Flash Gordon, Green Hornet, Doctor Strange, Plastic Man (???) Silver Surfer, Deadpool, Nick Fury Agent of Shield, Battle Chasers, Deathlok (kind of a weird choice if you ask me) a second attempt at The Flash (the first one was hilarious!), Green Lantern, Cloak and Dagger, Barbarella (hehehe) Zatanna, Hawkeye, Luke Cage, Grendel (Oooo I hope I hope I hope!) and a stand-alone Wolverine movie. I also hear that sequels to Sin City, Constantine, Daredevil, Hulk, Fantastic Four, Spawn, Judge Dredd, Dick Tracy and Hellboy are either in the works or are gonna be made as well. They've also been saying if the Iron Man movie does well they may go on to do an Avengers movie (not the british duo, the superhero team).

Comic book movies are a hot commodity these days what can I say? Its because Hollywood is running out of good ideas! LOL That and multi-million dollar franchises like Spiderman and X-Men are breaking box office records.

The one that really surprised me is that they're currently developing a fully CGI Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie thats supposed to be the most true to the original adaptation of the comic so far.

Funny thing is, I've been hearing about the TMNT movie there for the past few years. First I'd heard about it was something on the movie screen back when Rush Hour 2 came out.

Batman was also a more psychological book. It was written as a crimesolver\mystery book at the beginning. Plus joker had the ability to kill hundreds of people with his gas and other chemical waring he did

Also, since you state doomsday, same year they brought in BANE to the batman timeline, whom beat the shit out of batman and broke his back

You can make the same argument against superman and lex luthor, how could a bald man escape superman's fury so much and live to become president?

He is one of mine as well. American Beauty was a life-altering flim for me.

Batman Begins and Sin City were both quality movies...as was Spiderman 2. If you ask me, the Spiderman films are probably a couple of the best comic movies to ever come out.

X-Men films are entertaining but are not true to the comic whatsoever...seeing Wolverine kill those SWAT in X-Men was perhaps the greatest scene ever, though. 😀

I never watched the Hulk...and Fantastic 4 was only decent because Jessica Alba is sooooooo freaking hot. The could have made that movie so much better if they had included like...more than 10 minutes of action the ENTIRE MOVIE!!! I have no problem with movies that are all story...but man, its a mothaf@#$ing superhero movie. Gimme some fight scenes.

I find most movies based on comic books to be really bad or good. So many bad ones in recent years. DAMN YOU HOLLYWOOD! Why must you kill every superhero? WHY!?

What you mean is supervillian. 😀

By the time Hollywood is finished, the heroes won't have anyone left to battle aganist.

Hence why comic books now are rehashing old story lines\redoin em again. Because theyre runnin out of story and characters so they reprint old ones in a new light

I saw the trailer earlier this week. Kelsey Grammer is playing the role of Beast. That should be interesting. He's got the right, sophisticated mentality for it, but I wonder if his physical performances will stand up well. It will probably be CG. Also, I'm guessing Angel is supposed to be Archangel. I hope they don't flush this character down the toilet like they did Lady Deathstrike and Sabertooth. Those were two very important characters.

I like the fact all of the original cast is back. Thats what I was worried about, that they wouldn't bring them back. Magneto is still my favorite, by far. Maybe this movie will change that, but I doubt it.

Beast doesnt look CG in the trailer though.....looks more like a guy in a costume.....and not even like Kelsey Grammer...are they gonna use a voice over or something? He also doesnt look big enough either....Beast was a much more muscular character. I remember back when they first announced it they said Beast was gonna be CGI....maybe they went over budget?
