Has anyone noticed that commercials these days have NOTHING to do with what they are attempting to sell???

I mean it's ridiculous!

I'm open for comments and/or analysis!

Ok...tell me aboot your mother...

Hehe. Seriously, though, FT, there was a craze for "Sex sells" advertising that started aboot 10-15 years ago, and you'd think that it would taper off, or society would get fed up, or smarter, but man I tells ya, if they could design a popcorn maker TODAY in the shape of female genitalia (guess where the popcorn would come out - might have to call it poopcorn...hahahahahaha *cough* :sowrong: *ahem*) and get away with it, they would.

And a bunch of us boobs would buy it...

A very exasperated Cheers. :wow: :wow:

Of course not. It's all about the benjamins, and if sex or a famous face brings in the bucks, advertisers will use them. I don't like the practice either, but what can you do? 🙁

No I mean like commercials where they show a family just hanging out eating dinner and then all of a sudden a voice comes on saying "buy the new Chevy.... for.... blah blah blah..."

I mean the family eating dinner has NOTHING to do with the car being sold!!!

Yes, FT, those kinds of commercials are irrelevant to the product, and no one should buy it just because she or he agrees with the ads. I think of them as attention-getters that are useless to the consumer. 🙄

I agree for the most part, but I have to say that there are some hilarious commercials on tv right now. Some of them related to the product for sale...and some not so much.

I like the Verizon commercial. "Can ya hear me now?" Where the guy is hitting all the elevator buttons. Love that one. And the Sealy commercials where the car is made by Sealy and as soon as the guy sits down in the car he falls asleep.

I dunno, but I find the commercials more entertaining than the shows! LOL😀

Do y'all have any faves?
Joby

I LOVE the commercial for Staples... even though it is an OT commercial.

When that guy says, "I see flashing red lights and I'm riveted."

I laugh hysterically EVERY TIME!!!

Those Geico commercials are pretty cool, though talking geckos and auto insurance don't exactly go hand in hand! 😀

P.S. I HATE that Verizon dude! Whenever he asks, "Can you hear me now?" I think to myself, "Yes, unfortunately." 😛

I too hate the Verizon dude. I find most commercials extremely annoying (I watch mostly PBS), but I do like the ad about "the power of cheese," where they mention that astronauts never returned to the moon once they found it was made of rock. I will also watch pretty much anything with baby animals in it 🙂

Love,

i love the sealy bed commercials with the counting sheep, dislike the verizon guy, the commercials that i used to like were the panasonic tv commercials with the dalmations watching tv and the coke commercials with the polarbears(even though i'm an avid pepsi drimker) and the classic where's the beef wendy's commercials🙂

edited for spelling error oops😉

I also liked the Sealy commercial with the sheep going to jail for removing the mattress tag.

The commercial currently running that I find very obnoxious is the one for AFLAC. I would like to strangle the AFLAC goose.

You know who I hate.

Jerod. That worthless f***ing bastard.

You ain't gonna lose weight eating at Subway everynight!
What's worse is that... He's still a fatass!!!
:sowrong: :sowrong: :sowrong:

I try not to watch too much T.V. (I'm usually spending time here, anyway!), but I figured out a long time ago, you really cannot argue logic with commercials!

New one that is RETARDED!!!

It's a Ford Focus commercial where a guy is swerving throughout the road to keep his car from getting water on it.

Come on!!!!

It's just water!

One that I saw and I still don't know what the heck they were selling

They show this car with it's blinker on going through down town some where...and this stupid music playing in tempo to this blinker on the car! When it was over, I said what was that all about? Has anyone seen the commerical? I would tell what type of car but that is the stupid thing about it, like FT says some of these commerials have things in them that has nothing at all to do with what they are selling!
Happy Tickling! Tracy

I have come to the realization that:

ALL CAR COMMERCIALS ARE STUPID!!!

Not quite as stupid as the car salesmen who for someone insane reason think that SCREAMING AT THE TOPS OF THEIR LUNGS WILL MAKE ME WANT TO BUY THEIR FREAKIN' CARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who came up with that anyway? They guy whose mother yelled at him to clean his room figuring it was the only way that would work?

BUY THIS CAR! IT IS SO CHEAP! IT IS SO COOL! BUY IT NOW! NOW I SAY NOW!🙄

Well,

I'm not going to buy anything due to the commercial.

I don't think I have wanted something off of a commercial since I was a kid... well maybe those girl commercials (you know *pick up the phone!) LOL!

But seriously, do commercials really work?

do commercials work? honestly, I think more people are annoyed by advertising than not, but marketing executives live in their own happy little world where everyone really needs to have their lives interrupted by a sales pitch every five-point-three seconds.

if it ever gets to the extent we saw in Minority Report, we'll have a New Jersey sniper on our hands. Me, going to Madison Avenue.

seriously. when digital TV came 'round, the first thing people did was zap all the commercials. rather than take the frickin' hint that people do not like to watch commercials, Madison Avenue is instead trying to find ways to make their commercials more entertaining so that we WON'T zap them. I don't care how amusing your commercial is, I would rather be watching Spongebob.

most TV stations nowadays start hitting you with commercial interruptions almost every ten minutes. There's more ad content than show content on most stations these days. Don't believe me? Try watching a movie all the way through on a station like TBS or USA and start timing the amount of show versus the amount of commercials. They start breaking more frequently toward the end of the film. And we PAY for this!

ironically, when people turn off the TV due to ad overload, instead of thinking "gee, maybe we're going overboard", all it causes the marketroids to do is realize "hey, we're losing revenue cause nobody's watching, better step up the ads to make up for the loss!", resulting in more people tuning out, etc.

how about banner ads? when was the last time you clicked on one? who enjoys pop-ups on their websites? can I see a show of hands? remember, spam E-mail is just really cost-effective advertising. who cares that it makes E-mail pretty much unuseable?

making the ads MORE intrusive isn't suddenly going to make everyone want to see them. But marketing people don't see that. They figure the ads just aren't in our faces enough, even though we have junk mail, telephone soliciting, and now they're hiring people to sneak pitch you on the streets and spoofing fans on the Internet (like Gabrielle's false reviews of her videos here, 'cept in person).

the final proof; why are infomercials aired at 4am? is it because nobody wants to watch them?

advertising... such hatred, have I.

I attended several marketing seminars in my job, and they clearly said:

- You've only got a few seconds to attract attention to your ad or commercial (a few miliseconds in print media!)

- Yelling above the average noise level of others WILL attract attention.

- It doesn't matter if your commercial annoys people. Annoying commercials remain in your memory for a longer time-span. Therefore annoyance is a desirable effect, especially for 'low profile' products.

- Commercials aren't meant to convey information. They work their way into your subconscious mind, simply by frequent repitition. And contrary to what we may think, most of our purchase decisions happen within our subconscious mind.

Just a few non-commercial infos... 😉

Best print ad I ever saw was a view of Paris from the roof of Notre Dame Cathedral. In the foreground was a bottle of Listerine mouthwash sitting next to a stone carving. The only ad copy on the page was, "Gargoyle with Listerine."

Two more thoughts on advertising, both posted at our old Delphi site:

"The longest word in the English language is the one following the phrase: 'And now a word from our sponsor.'"
-- Hal Eaton, Reader's Digest, 1949 (!)

"Dogs who earn their living by appearing on television commercials in which they constantly and aggressively demand meat should remember that in at least one Far Eastern country they *are* meat."
-- Fran Lebowitz, Social Studies, 1981
