Have you ever been, or encountered somebody, who's a compulsive liar? And how did it affect you or them?

For example, when I was doing my basic training at Deepcut, there was this corporal who seemed really decent, until somebody told me that he was a compulsive liar. Apparantly, he'd told this girl he was dying of cancer in order to get her to go out with him. The problem with this is that the girl was not only a lifelong friend of his, but also of his family. So the plan fell apart when she gave her condolences to his mother, who naturally knew that it was a big lie.

Another not-quite-so-extreme example was a friend of mine from University who had started going out with this girl. For some reason, he ended up following her to school and sitting in on her lecture. When the lecturer asked why he was there, he said he was an exchange student. Five minutes later he was stood at the pulpit-thingy giving an impromptu lecture about the new exchange program he was involved with.

I don't think I'd have the lack of foresight to lie about cancer, or the reflexes to make up a speech in front of a room full of students, so I tend to try and steer clear of it, but do any of you guys have any funny stories?

Wow, your friend must have been a real quick thinker to think up a pulpit speech like that, Sensh.

And I used to be a compulsive liar--about TT. It took me YEARS to get up the guts to come clean about it. The impulse to lie about when I'm on it still crops up, but I force myself to say "I'm on 'my site' " and granma knows what I mean. It's a little embarrassing, but I like being honest

When I was going through college I had a roommate that was a compulsive liar. I'm a pretty easy person to get along with, so I didn't call him out on these outlandish lies he would tell.

He would say things like how he was asked to tryout by the Detroit Red Wings, but had family issues at the time so he couldn't make the trip. He also said that he tried out for the US Soccer Team, but twisted his knee and therefore couldn't qualify. He actually was in the Army Reserves, but he would say that he was a trained sniper that did assignments for the military. It was really above and beyond what you would expect from this guy if you saw him in person.

It never effected me much personally. I just smiled and shook my head most the time. My other friends hated him though for it and always called him out. It was uncomfortable even for me to watch him try to backtrack and connect his stories together.

Anyway, he only lasted a semester before being kicked out (apparently sniping soccer players on iceskates like to skip class), and I guess the only reason I remember him is for these lies he told all the time. I wish I would have asked him if he honestly believed that any of us for a second believed in his lies.

For a couple of years in high school there was one kid who rode in the seat across from me on the bus. His lies were absolutely absurd, and none of us on the bus liked the guy. He could rarely even finish a story before any one of us would call him on it. The kid was like 15 or 16 when he rode with us, and he'd claim to have done things like trading an old washing machine for a car with a drunk neighbor. We could be pretty cruel to him at times, but with all the things he'd claim, it was hard to feel sorry for him.

Aye, I know what you're talking about. I know some... I won't mention them here, as I tend to hang out with them, but I do know some.

Talking dirty behind people's back can mean they toss some dirt over the shoulder into my eyes and then all the lemon in the world isn't going to clean it up.

Hey... don't be so mean 😛

unfortunately my mother...she lied most of her adult life to me..and i believed her until her final years, when i finally realized what was happening..she would try and turn me against my in laws, which made me act unnaturally around them all the time, as i believed the lies she said that they had told her about me..she would lie to me about things my sister said..later on when we had to move away from her, she lied about having muscular dystrophy...said she was diagnosed with that..lied about a man proposing marriage to her..all to lay a guilt trip on me for having to move away..
