Computer Problem...

Everytime I want "scandisk" my C drive, a window pops up and says, "Scandisk has restarted 10 times b/c Windows or another program has been writing to this drive..." while no other programs are running.

The computer frequently freezes now, including when I'm surfing the net. The red light for the hard drive won't come on, but it seems as if the computer is doing something alright, and I just have to wait until it's 'finished' with it's task and then it seems to be running alright until the next freeze, which is aboot 30 seconds later.

So...I've done everything except re-format my C drive, including re-installing Win '98 SE (my OS) and even that won't reinstall b/c is says that I'm missing a .dll file, or sumpin'.

I've never had this problem b4, and I'm usually good with computers, but this one has me stumped. It's almost as if a huge file is being written to my C drive with me being unawares, and is constantly freezing when I go aboot my day-today business using my application programs and the internet, as I have stated.

It's not a virus, btw, for I've already checked.

Anyone else ever gone through this, and what is the solution?

Many thanks to all those who reply.

Cheers.😀

What OS do you have Moses? And like K asked did have you tried defragging your hard drive?

Uh I had that problem once.....................turned out to be the Nimbda virus. 😱

several options

hmmm. You can try either to defrag that harddrive. Scan your hard disk for viruses. Call the computer manufacturer where you bought your computer at. Dont worry everyone has windows problems. Sometimes i think Bill GATes bundles the windows os with problems. :sowrong:

My 98 was doing the same thing. If defragmenting, cleaning cookies, getting rid of viruses, and such other steps, don't work, it might be a corrupted file. I had that before, and it will mess things up.

I ultimately got tired of 98 and its slew of troubles, and got XP. It's a pain to learn a new system, but it's something that might be beneficial.

I was also told that some OS programs will write to others constantly. It might be only a "message" every minute or so,but it can be troublesome.

Moses is your pc problems fixed?😕 I tried to help you but I needed to know what OS you were running?

Also, is the screensaver turned off? When it activates, it causes Windows to reach out and touch the virtual memory on the HD, forcing scandisk to seize up.

Have you tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete to find out just what is running on your system? A lot of times, you have programs running that you don't know about. Close out everything except Explorer and Systray, then try running scan disk again. You can also try running it in Safe Mode.

Now, once you scan the disk, look at the report afterwards, specically the bad sectors. Now, every disk has bad sectors, but if you have a huge amount, like in the tens of thousands, then your hard disk is going bad. That's what happened to me recently, when I had similar problems.

Fixed.

Seems a certain dl from KaZaA just didn't know when to quit.

An *.exe file was running continuously, even without prompting...

So, I re-formatted my C: drive (ain't that a bitch) and re-installed all my drivers (an even bigger bitch), but here I am, online once again.

Thanks to all who replied.

Cheers.😀
