Computer Question For Best Friend

Hi, this time my computer is okay, but, my best friend Russell knows I belong to this forum, and he has a computer problem that he wanted me to ask the forum about.

I haven't seen the problem on his computer personally, but, Russ told me that his Internet Explorer is either corrupted, or isnt working properly. He's tried reloading the IE, as well as reloading Windows itself, and no dice to both.

Russ questioned to me whether he should get a tech person to his house to service his computer. (I know how expensive those can be, in Feb 2008, it cost me $200). Someone recommended to him that he should just get another computer, and should purchase a refurbished one, because he was told he can get one for $100 or a bit more.

Any advice that I could pass on to him would be appreciated, as he cant even get online now. Thanks.

Corrupted? The question to ask would be what the symptoms are. Does it not start up? Does it give errors? If so, what do they say/do?

One possibility is to upgrade it if it is an older version. If he uses IE6 or 7, he could upgrade it to 8 and possibly solve the problem.

Thanks for the reply, HDS. To be honest, I dont know what version he has, and I cant even email him to ask. All I know is that he said when he tries logging on to Internet Explorer, it freezes, and he cant surf.

I cant call him tomorrow, because I have to take my mom to the Dr for a test, but I may be able to try him Friday. I'll see if I can get more info and then post. Thanks again.
