My brother came over and helped me w/ my virus problem and now that's fixed. He used msconfig to stop the programs frfom loading everytime my computer loaded. Now that those are gone, some settings I had before are no longer working...ex..

1. I cant right click and Save Target As on a file...Save Target As is no longer an option. How do I fix this?

2. I (sometimes) cant copy and paste links in messenger windows..

3. My laptop scroll pad on the right of the touch pad doesnt work anymore...

Help! (please?)

What OS have you ?. Please be explicit, Win 95, 98, XP, ME.

Well fix that in win xp, would be a bit hard, because you need knowledge over Windows Register, so the solution easily reachable is reinstall win xp using repair option, this only replace those parts of windows damaged without change your present profile nor your installed applications. Do you have win xp installation CD?.

I have a feeling you inadvertently disabled the touchpad program. If you re-enable that, your problems MAY be fixed. Go back into MSCONFIG and peruse the list of programs that are NOT checked. Find an entry that may look like the touchpad program. It may have the maufacturer's name (or part of it) embedded in it, or something that says "touchpad" or something similar (and, perhaps, cryptic). Check that entry (you only need to do it once even if the entry appears multiple times), exit from MSCONFIG and re-boot.

If you're not sure what to check, try to copy-paste the list into an e-mail (or reply here) and I'll take a look.

As Ticklishtickler said, copy your MSCONFIG list in some way here. I will do a search on each task at several sites I know of to discover which, if any, is causing your problem. Or, ticklishtickler may get it, before I even need to.

Two is very strange....can you describe in more detail the issue?

And one seems interesting. I remember that happening to me once, but it was caused by Adobe Creative Suite. I doubt that is the case with you. I will need a comprehensive list of any programs installed by your brother and any actions taken by him to discover the cause.

You also could hit "start system recovering" button in msconfig (maybe in english isn't wrote thus, remember my win xp version is in spanish, so i'm only translating those words from spanish into english).

System Restore, yes. However, if a Virus was removed, that may do more harm than good.
She must be very careful, if she go ahead into System Restore, then she should to choose a previous date to get that virus issue, of course this is only possible if she recently didn't install any application.

I think using System Restore, while useful at times, should only be used as a last resort. While it may be necessary, let's try looking at your MSCONFIG list first.

if you have the operating system cd for the laptop, start yer system up with that in the drive, there should be an option to repair\reinstall windows, that would fix any OS problems you have.

Thanks soo much guys for helping me!

Ok. How do I copy and paste the startup list? I've tried right clicking but it doesnt work. And pretty much all of the things were disabled, but when I run msconfig again after a reboot, they're all there. My bro said I have hidden files on my computer that I don even know about and if I activate all he things that were set to run before he came, that would cause all the pop-ups when I connected to the internet and all the virus warnings. I may not have any of these probs when I go back to school tomorrow because i dont need a modem there.. but who knows...I'll still need you guys help.

So yeah... cant right click and save stuff....the copy and paste problem is no longer a problem..but my scroll pad still doenst work. I'm gonna try this checkbox that ook like it may be what I disabled... and reboot and see how that goes.

If the virus was fully removed, the old System Restore points would have been deleted anyway as part of the removal process. The right-click menu is controlled by the registry, so the registry would need to be repaired manually by someone very knowledgeable. Repairing the Windows installation might solve the problem, but it will NOT correct a problem related to a non-Microsoft product.

If you are very lucky, you might be able to repair it by going to Start-> Run and then typing in sfc /scannow and hit Enter. This will replace any damaged Windows system files it encounters, but it might not solve the problem. I also recommend running a chkdsk just to be safe: Start-> Run-> chkdsk c: /f and then press Y and Enter in the black DOS box that will appear, then reboot.

Here is the Microsoft article on solving startup problems:

Best of luck!

And if all else fails, and you can save what files you need and can afford to re-install programs, the easiest thing to do would be a complete re-format of your hard drive, followed by a reinstallation of Windows. Before embarking on this rather time-consuming option, I suggest following Missy Val's advice.

Iluv2btickled,

I have some additional advice for you. If you manage to get your computer up and running like normal again, I VERY STRONGLY suggest that you very quickly get these three things on your computer (if you don't have them already):

1) Anti-virus software - Norton Anti-Virus is good (from my experiences in using it) but it's not free. If you want free antivirus software, AVG Antivirus is quite popular. You can get it here: www.grisoft.com

2) A firewall - I use the firewall ZoneAlarm which has proven to be good for me. There are other popular firewalls that some people prefer over ZoneAlarm, but if you want to try ZoneAlarm (it's free) you can get it here: www.zonelabs.com

3) Ad-Aware SE Personal AND Spybot Search & Destroy - These programs check your computer for adware and spyware and get rid of it. You can get Ad-Aware Personal here: www.lavasoft.de and you can get Spybot Search & Destroy here: www.spybot.info (both programs are free).

Best of luck 🙂

Everything should still be in your MSCONFIG list, just unchecked. What happened after you checked what you thought was the touchpad program and rebooted?

I agree with everything that Anonymous said, with the exception of Norton Antivirus, which caused me nothing but trouble. AVG Free is a much better program 🙂

I also strongly recommend using the Mozilla Firefox browser (free, www.mozilla.org ) instead of the flawed and insecure Internet Explorer. Most spyware installations come through unpatched security breaches in Internet Explorer, and even XP SP2 hasn't solved its problems.

Best of luck,

1. START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>INTERNET OPTIONS>PROGRAM TAB, click reset web settings. On Advanced Tab, click restore defaults then OK. Launch IE and see if Save Target As is restored. Doing an "Enable All" in MSCONFIG in #3 might correct this as well since it probably was a process that was disabled from startup.
.2. Select link with left mouse button in blue, CTRL+C to copy and then CTRL+V to paste in messenger window.
3. Start>Run>MSCONFIG. On Startup tab, click ENABLE ALL, OK, reboot. Touch scroll should work once windows reboots. You can go back later to Startup tab again to selectively uncheck whatever programs/processes from loading. Do NOT uncheck anything relation to "Synaptics" or a touchpad.

I had this problem when I enabled the 'Content Advisor'. I get around it by disabling it, down loading the file and re-enabling.

Disabling the content advisor worked for saving downloads...now to fix my scrolling and copying and pasting problem..hee hee.. wait... maybe the content advisor was the cause of the copying prob too...hmm...* goes to test*

Amywood, that's amazing -- I've never used the Content Advisor, so I never would have thought of it as causing the problem. Hopefully, you saved ILuv from having to reformat or reinstall Windows 🙂

Some sites I like to go to will, sometimes, redirect to sites I don't want to go to. By adding the URL or IP address (123.456.789.123) to the 'Approved Sites' list, IE will block them.

Ahh ... I use a hosts-file based blocker to prevent sites from redirecting me unexpectedly to a site I don't want to visit, since it works with Firefox as well as IE 🙂 (AdFree, free of charge at http://lucille.dhs.org )

Did it work?

Yeah! It was all because Content advisor was enabled. Thanks soo much amywood! Mwah!

and to think I almost took my comp to Best Buy and lost everything again! 😛
