My internet is acting really funny, and I was wondering if anyone good with computers can help me out. Sometimes when I try browse I get a message that says "page cannot be displayed: invalid syntax error" which is a fancy way of saying I spelled it wrong. The problem is I spelled it right. A similar problem occurs when I click links sometimes. It stays on the page I cliked from, loads for a very long time (which is odd considering I have cable) and then gives me "Page Cannot be Displayed". Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?

It could be a number of issues, most of which probably have nothing to do with you or your connection, but rather the server on which the website runs. The links within it could be defective or any number of things could be wrong, none of which can be remedied by you.

It could also be your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, I'd suggest using Firefox. I would get problems like this in IE sometimes, but not anymore, since I made the switch. Firefox is better in every way than IP.

HDS should be in soon enough to give you more assistant if you should require it.

First, Vlad is right: try Firefox, free from www.mozilla.org 🙂

Second, if this is happening at many sites it could be a problem with your ISP, your connections (cables, wires), phone line noise if you're on dial-up, or software corruption. You could try reinstalling your ISP's software to see if that helps.

Good luck,

*Floats in on a magic carpet stolen from TickleTheater* I recognize what is happening to you, for it once happened to me. However, the possible causes are numerous. Firstly, I second Missy Val and the esteemed Count; grab Firefox. Not only is it a good idea regardless of whether you have issues or not, but it is sure to speed up your browsing a little bit (Although Opera has been shown to be faster on Windows machines, but not as good at rendering pages correctly).

Secondly, it could indeed be an ISP problem. Tell me, when downloading files, is your download speed fast? i.e., when you save a large file and the download window appears (In Internet Explorer), what speed does it show? 176 kb/s, 52 kb/s, etc? Going along with that, who is your ISP and what level of internet do you purchase from them? What speed do they say you should have? If you tell me your ISP name, I can find that number. If you are downloading files at the rate you are supposed to be downloading them, then it is not your ISP, more than likely.

Thirdly, you could very well have spyware and adware on your computer. See this thread: http://www.tickletheater.com/showthread.php?t=13644. Grab and install Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Spywareblaster. Scan with the programs that do scanning and remove anything they find. If you don't have a firewall or antivirus program, grab one of what you need (Suggestions are in that thread). If after doing all that you are still running slowly, let me know and we can dig deeper.

I'm pretty sure it's my ISP. I have Ad Aware and I constantly run checks because I've had serious problems with spyware in the past. Sometimes my downlad speed is fast and sometimes it isn't, I'd call their tech support line, but the last time I tried they'd ask a stupid question such as "Is your modem on?" and then put me on hold for another half an hour.
