Cure for hiccups?

Recently I have been going through hour-long phases of rather painful hiccups, especially in the evenings. It's actually straining my stomach muscles more than any amount of tickling ever could.

I tried all 'house-cures' we know of in Germany (holding your breath and swallowing for three times, eat a spoonful of honey, think of three bald men, etc.😀). Now I'm curious to hear about worldwide solution attempts to this problem... 😎

You just need a good scare Hal..

Here ya go.........................

(never thought I'd ever use THAT more than once LOL )

Actually, Hal....hiccups are caused by a spasm in the throat. The trick is to get the spasm to settle down so they'll stop. One of the most effective ways I've found (and I do this a lot) is to hum. Yes. I DID say hum! I actually learned that little trick from my cat. Any time he gets the hiccups, if you get him to purr, the hiccups stop. So, I decided to try it once when I had a case that just wouldn't go away. It worked! It's worked nearly every time since. So, what's your fav tune?

Ann

BTW....my doctor thought it was a great cure too! 🙂

This One Works For Me

Take a deepp breath. hold it for about 15 seconds or until a hiccup tries to rear it's ugly head (if a hiccup comes up try to supress it while holding your breath).
Exhale.
Repeat

Usually it takes me less than 30 to 40 seconds to get rid o them

Also,,,

If they're painful, usually that's a symptom of something else. I'm not sure what your diet is, but you might wanna cut some red meat and fat out of it.

Getting tickled is actually a good cure.
Also, if you get a large glass of water with a straw, and you hold your ears while you drink it, it actually works about 80% of then time.

That's Because

When you plug your ears you eliminate the major flow path for your body to maintain it's pressure. It basically forces the hiccups back into solution. In fact all the better solutions involve somewhay of either keeping more air in your system, thus increasing gas solubility, or raising internal body pressure, thus raising solubility.
I've seen one guy try that drinking water from the opposite side of a glass. It was funny.

Ann,
I use the humming trick too! I realized when my son was an infant, that when he got the hiccups, I just rocked and hummed a song to him. It realaxed him and he would coo (or hum) back at me and his hiccups would go away.

So, Hal, though I like Wallstreet's description..and it does work, it might be difficult to get a pal to cure you like that at the drop of a hat. 😛 To cure yourself..I vote with Ann. Hum your favorite show tune...giggle!

I always thought hiccups came from the diaphragm spasming. *What do I know...I think I heard this somewhere years ago...hiccup research isn't high on my list...lol*

I also thought hiccups were diaphragm contractions. The way I always get rid of them is to hold my breath, but to (I don't know how to describe this.) kinda push the air without exhaling, so that I'm sort of forcing my diaphragm down. I do this for about ten seconds. I don't know if I recommend this method, though, because if you do this for an extended period of time, you can get extremely dizzy or pass out. I tried this once at a friend's house, and I blacked out for a couple seconds, leaned against his wall, and slid to the floor. When I recomposed myself, I felt tingly all over my body. It sounds idiotic, I know, but the hiccups disappeared! I'm not recommending this, though!

P.S. I've discovered that one can sometimes get rid of a headache by giving themself a brain-freeze/ice cream headache. Although, I have to say, for the few seconds it lasts, it is an utterly MISERABLE feeling! I don't necessarily recommend this, either. It's just some useless information I thought I'd share. Hopefully, I haven't made anyone dumb by writing this!

i'm a nurse (big deal huh?)

hic-ups are caused by abdominal pressure pushing up into the thorasic cavity, there by limiting the expantion room of the lungs.
if you had an oxygen supply at home a couple wiffs of that would temporarily help. the pain could be from excess pressure in the abdominal cavity.
forget about reducing your red meat, that won't help. you have a real problem. i suggest talking to a doctor.

Thanks for all the useful hints, folks, I really appreciate it! 🙂 I'll definitely try the humming method. And as I have to undergo a series of lab tests in the upcoming weeks anyway, I'll mention my hiccups to the docs.

BTW, Ray: Your pic scared me so much that I got the hiccups again... 😀

From what I've read, 90% of the time hiccups are caused by an elecrolyte imbalance in your diaphragm, causing the spasms. Try putting a little sugar under your tongue. If that doesn't work it means the imbalance is in the other direction and a little lemon will work.

Well, I just hold by breath for as long as possible - which is usally a while - good lung capacity, and hold your nose. Eventually the back of your throat feels odd and they stop! Probably works less well for small lunged people, but that does the trick for me.

Bah...

Too complicated...I just watch any Michael Jackson video...*brrrrrrrrrrr....shudder*......

Yepper..

And diaphragms act as huge gas amplifiers. The electrolytic reaction is caused by guess what? Gas coming out of solution and reacting in the diaphragm. Gasses are some of the biggest electrolytic reactors in nature because they tend to give up electrons easily. They're high on the electronegativity scale.
