Daumantas, is this a Bach "fact"?

Daumantas, do you know if there's any truth to this story about Bach: As a kid he sneaked at night to copy manuscripts of masterpieces his older brother had forbidden him to handle. When his brother took away the copies it didn't matter because he had memorized them.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit, the man's a genius and the king of Baroque. Bach's 3rd Brandenburg concerto is my personal favorite.

Haven't heard that story before. It is a fact, though, that Bach was such a non-entity in his own time that some of his scores were used to wrap fish. It wasn't until Mendelssohn rediscovered him that he was recognized for the genius he was.

Right, Bach and his family never became rich. But he was a very lively person, enjoying all pleasurable aspects of life: eating, drinking, and he had a lot of children... 😛

Oh BTW, do you know the difference between Johann Sebastian Bach and Andrew Lloyd Webber? No?

Bach was a composer who farted a lot, whereas Webber is a fart who composed a lot... 😀

Ouch! And he was an orphan, how sad! Hey, you never know what life will bring.

I used to play piano. My talent is just about worthy of being fish wrap 🙂. If I play at all now it's usually some Bach invention or minuet and a smattering of other composers' easy pieces. When I'm driving my fingers play silent melodies on the steering wheel.

Hey, has anyone here heard Gould's vocal fugue: "so you want to write a fugue... go ahead write a fugue that we can sing!" Very entertaining and skillful.

Heck, TickleCrazy, my playin' ain't even THAT good. My compositions have been used as coffee coasters at least one, too.

Wait, was J.S. Bach an orphan? I thought he'd a family, and he'd sorta have to, for this rumor to make much sense. Now that y'mention it, though, I don't recall much mention bein' made about his past, back in Music History I. Just his compositions, and that he had a lot of kids.

Hal, he may not have been rich, but he WAS invited to royal events regularly. The man got many gifts as an artist, in addition to those he was born with, and those he passed on to his progeny.

The guy was one o' my favs in school.

Bach was famous in his own time, but as an organist, not a composer. Most people didn't even know he wrote music until he died.

Sorta like if Paul McCartney were well-known as a pretty good bass guitarist, and that's it, and then a hundred years from now someone came across all these SONGS he wrote with some guy named John...

LOL!

Yeah, according to the story I heard, that was why he was being raised by his older brother, and why his brother was disciplining him instead of their parents.

If Bach had not been such a genius I might have passed my counterpoint class.

Ugh... counterpoint. Omega, that's the closest I've ever seen to you using a bad word. 😉

Oh yeah! well . . . fudge!!!!

Bach rules!

I've always been a big Bach fan. Those short-shorts that Catherine used to wear were the best. And her sister Barbara was also awesome, especially in "Spy Who Loved Me" and "Caveman". I'm not really sure which Bach was hotter.
I never knew that these beautiful ladies composed music. You learn something new every day.

HA! Good answer, WS.

Catherine Bach wore short shorts - with pantyhose!

Nylon-stocking-fetish guys like me consider her something of a heroine.
