Howdy howdy howdy. :super_hap

Well, it looks like General Discussion area is getting a tad stale now after all the ruckus of the sockpuppet members and introduction threads, so I thought I'd post a topic that might be good for a few pages of discussion. 🙂

So, are there any skills you want to learn or any hobbies you want to take up? Y'know, stuff like learn to play the guitar, learn a foreign language, learn to drive a motorcycle, lion-taming, fire-breathing etc etc etc?

For me, I want to (and am currently) trying to learn the guitar. A simple hobby to fill my spare time with. I don't want to become "the greatest guitar player to have ever stolen the hearts of young ladies who consider me their idol and worship me LIKE A GOD"! Just enough to strum a few toons I like... at the most, some stuff by Disturbed (although the likelyhood of me achieving that in my lifetime is remote... so, so remote). 😛

If I had the time though, I would love to learn Japanese. Simply to feel like I've achieved something difficult.

hmm,I'd like to learn how to speak Italian.I tried to learn French and it just didn't work.I'd akso like to learn how surf, fly a hot-air balloon and maybe hang glide that would be a cool experience.

I took up the guitar when I was 15 and can tell you that it's a nice little hobby to have, Bob. The ladies seem to like it too, so stick with it. 😉 As for skills I don't already have, like Mari, I've always thought it might be cool to learn another language. I don't know if I'd have the patience, though.

I'd like to learn to draw. One of the things that shaped my studies/career-path was my unsteady hand. I wanted to go into engineering or architecture but I can't even draw straight lines if you give me a ruler. :lol

You still have to draw with a pencil? My dad's a civil engineer and he hasn't picked up a pencil and straightedge since 1990. AutoCAD replaced everything.

I have been teaching myself to draw for some years now and am almost ready to start displaying my stuff. I have had some great successes in the past but not on a consistant basis.

I took up the guitar when I was young but gave it up some years ago. Having a discussion with someone about "Guitar Hero" made me dig out the old instruments and knock about on them. I couldn't part with them as after a long time I finally had some really first class guitars.

A great learning tool I wish I had years ago is Guitar Pro 5 which I recommend thoroughly to any one. Apart from the program itself you can download full music and tab for almost any song/artist you care to name and slow them down to get the parts down. You can also write your stuff down.

So my aim would be not to learn anything new but to be acceptable with what I already do.

PS: just remembered - I've just started learning yoga as I realised how unflexable I have become.

Yes,yoga is a wonderful thing to learn.I have taken one class so far and left feeling more peaceful then,I think ever before

I'd like to get back onto learning fencing again. All I got was Grade I Foil :cry

Don't sell yourself short Bob. I'm sure with practice you'll be a pro in your own way. 🙂 That kid had only been playing a month you know.Just think what you could do in that time!

Good question though, there are lots of things I'd love to be able to do....

- I'd love to learn Gaelic- I only know two phrases that I managed to pick up from my cousins as they were learning it. It's a difficult language to learn apparently, but I think it would be a good challenge.

- I'd love to be able to play the flute or drums. Not quite sure why. Drums would probably help release any tension I have so would be cool and the flute would have a nice calming effect.lol.

- I'd love to be able to write- give myself a hobby that would mean I'd never be bored.

- I also wish I had the talent/skills to be a stand up comedienne i.e to be a confident public speaker and be funny!

I'd love to be able to draw realistic portraits and to become acclimatized to using an electronic pen.

I'd love to pick up tennis, as a kid i took lessons but i never got the hang of it. To this day i can't serve for the life of me.

I also would really like to learn how to sing, not classically, but enough so i can feel confident belting out some nice tunes whenever my mood suits it.

Val, I would recommend "Drawing on the right side of the Brain" which gave me the courage to get started and "Drawing a likeness" which I believe will work if you follow the process.

Thanks for the info -- I'll check those out.

With C# you have to use .net or mono, with C++ you can use any platform. If you want to go with C# and .net you can download the .net framework and Visual Studio Express for free on the Microsoft site.

I'd like to learn to play double bass...I can do it somewhat, but I have to think way too hard about it, and I'm not too fast yet. Couplets, triplets...they aren't so bad, but chugging double bass is just gnarly.

I want to learn how to harness my latent psionic abilities so I can foretell the winning lottery numbers...again and again and AGAIN!

Also, having telekinesis wouldn't be too bad a thing either. ^_~ :stickout
