I am unable to view *.AVI files.

The suggestion was made that I get DivX

I went to http://www.divx.com/

I spent about fifteen minutes there and looked around on about 9 or 10 different pages on the site.

Sighted nothing, downloaded same.

Is there a freeware app that will play AVI files ?

The DivX site had many apps for sale, and some for "trial" (translation: trials and tribulations) but I didn't see a clear and simple freeware app that will play *.AVI files

I suppose the best course of action for now is to avoid *.AVI files

I had a problem.

HDS suggested a solution.

I tried it.

It appears to work.

Once in awhile, the internet works like it's supposed to

Thank you, HDS

If you have RealPlayer installed, simply download the codec from the above link and install it. Then, try playing the AVI files with RealPlayer, and it should work.

If no RealPlayer:

http://download.divx.com/divx/DivXPro511Adware.exe

Download the DivX Pro 5 thingy from up there. Install it, and play the AVI's on DivX's player.
Why the RealPlayer distinction? DivX is a codec, it's enumerated and consulted by any (proper) media player on the system. Also, DivX Player comes with the non-Pro bundle as well as the Pro one, so there's no need to go for that. Finally, the Pro version with adware includes some spyware as the catch for not having to pay for it! P50, I suggest you uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs, clean your system using Ad-aware, then install the free and non-spyware version of the package from the site (The link is labelled "Standalone DivX Codec (FREE)" and it's underneath the table). You should then be able to use any player - Windows Media Player, Real Player, DivX Player (the little app that comes with the codec download), etc...

Why, eh? Used to be on my comp, before I grabbed the codec, that trying to open a file requiring Divx caused RealPlayer to open and say that it couldn't play it. Thus, I said that assuming (Which often causes you to make an 'ass' (Har har) out of yourself) that others might have had the same thing happen to them. And RealPlayer makes the Divx requiring formats something it opens by default, or at least, it did for me, and thusly, after installing the codec, not the player, RealPlayer would be the program to play said files. Lord, I'm rambling again....

The first link that I gave him WAS the standalone Divx codec. However, he did not say which he downloaded, so I have no idea of which option he took.

And everything has spyware, from Windows itself to RealPlayer, to Divx. Running AdAware and Spybot should be a must regardless.
