You can test your anti-virus software to make sure
that it actually does detect viruses by using a safe
virus test file called Eicar.
You can go to www.eicar.com and they have the test
files on there (you'll see the link to the test files
on the left of their homepage).
These files have been tested and they do not do any
harm to your computer if executed. All they do is open
a DOS window that says "EICAR VIRUS TEST FILE" and
then it closes.
Most anti-virus software detects and alerts you of the
Eicar test virus. Again, it is a safe file.
