This is not a request for a pity party I am taking medication for the depression but I honestly think I have it because I always seem out of it when people talk to me.

The short answer is yes. People with depression tend to get more depressed around the holiday season for a variety of reasons. Some can include not being able to (or having) family to be with during the holidays. The stress holidays and shopping can also bum people out. This is especially true for people who are on a fixed income or low income.

There is another disorder called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which can affect people primarily during the winter months. This is believed to be cause by lack of sunlight which produces vitamin D when the sun hits the skin. For some "sun lamps" which put off the same rays as sun light (tanning won't work) can trick the skin into producing the same effect.

Lastly I am not sure if you got your meds from a family doctor or a psychiatrist. The latest "trend" is people with depression and often anxiety get psych meds from there family doc and sometimes do not get diagnosed properly.

I hope this helped and ya feel better🙂

I couldn't have said it better 😀 Good luck tickleteasing!

Yes it exists and I think I'm caught right in the middle of it. 🙁

I was pretty depressed last year during the holidays. I just stayed home and didn't go anywhere or see anyone.

BUT...I had just gotten divorced, I was working in retail (hearing all the damn Christmas music since Halloween!) and just feeling plain old burned out in general.

This year, things are a bit better, I am not working in retail and I am looking forward to the holidays! For me, it isn't a chronic thing, just a one time deal. I do think that others can get depressed around the holidays in general thou.

I think depression does and can happen during the holidays whether it is clinical or caused by events happening to you. I just lost my favorite parrot Tuffy to a stroke and buried her this afternoon. I don't presume to say that my depression is as intense or prolonged as yours might be, Tickleteasing, but today I am definately depressed.

I totally understand. I dealt with it Thursday for the first time ever. I don't suffer from depression at all, but something about this TG, was just sad. I felt "lonely" all day, but not unloved. I felt totally loved, and had a ton of visitor comments here, and emails, and phonecalls.... just felt alone. I don't suffer from depression and never have, but I can see how those who do could definitely feel it worse at holidays.

For myself I actually attribute it to the fact that because I have so many amazing people in my life, and I AM loved, and being so far away from all of them just made it hard to spend the day alone. Dun know.

Oi, I suffer from this, but not in the same way alot of people do. For me it's BECAUSE of the whole family thing. Most of my family hates me! So having myself be badgered to go to the big family gatherings and such is rather annoying as I sit across the dinner room getting dirty looks from half of the people there since they think I'm some horrible person due to some bullshit that happened a long time ago. So yeah, depression...

Holiday depression is common and well known. It happens to different people for different reasons. Sometimes it's issues within the family that date back years. Sometimes it's based on concerns that you won't be able to get someone a special gift you want to give them or you won't receive that special gift you've wanted for so long. Sometimes it's just a mixture of commercialized overload.

If you are being affected by it the best thing is to talk to your doctor first. One thing I've heard of that has helped many is to volunteer yourself at a soup kitchen or helping to sort the toys with toys for tots or something along those lines. Those don't cost anything and you get so much back just helping those less fortunate than yourself.

Just know that you are indeed loved and appreciated here by many of us who call you friend.

Same here.I don't have much family that I speak with due to events that happened many years ago.It makes the holidays tough to deal with and more saddening then joyful.🙁

Just know I am here for you always

Yes I have to say I agree and have to second it. Seasonal affective disorder happens to many people sadly. I also suffer badly from seasonal affective disorder and I majorly get the big time BLUES when winter strikes. I hate winter. Yes I love the holidays and holiday activities and decorations and stuff that go with it. But I don't care for snow and freezing temperatures and what comes along with winter, slush, drizzle, and ice. YUCK!! I know what you are saying tickleteasing. Yes it is very well common for many to have holiday depression-think it pretty much goes along with SAD seasonal affective disorder and the sun not being out so much and very rarely-when it does not long-more gloomy skies and snow and glum than sunshine...the days being shorter and night coming faster-getting dark quicker sadly. It SUCKS.

But I know what you are saying...I have been really sad and down lately myself and have had the major winter holiday blues lately.. I know it is not fun and not a picnic. Also keep in mind you just lost your grandfather this past labor day or so, this will be your first Christmas and holiday time without him, exceedingly hard-so be kind and gentle with yourself for feeling depressed and sad like you do..it is understandable. Cut yourself some slack friend. Just know you are cared for and dearly loved. Love you friend, just know I am always here for you to listen, laugh with, and here if you wish to talk, give you hugs. Hope that soon you feel better and have good health, no more colds and soon that your holiday depression starts to lessen and improve and lift for you...so soon you can do your best and what you can to enjoy the holidays. HUGS

Always your Friend,
Ticklebunny 2 :twohugs::twohugs::twohugs::parrot2:

it does in a way for me. i was hoping to see my love, Ticklebug101 before Christmas, but it's not gonna happen now. i just wish i could see the love of my life for Christmas.

After losing an animal companion? No wonder. You have my sincerest condolences.

Tickleteasing - If you're the one Ticklebunny referred to as having lost a grandfather, you have my condolences as well.

As much I don't want to be the downer for everyone's holiday season...I frankly detest the holidays with a serious passion. Between the Seasonal thing, the constant reminders of the death of my son, my fucked-up family and all of their yearly bullshit, the crap I see everyone put themselves through, the sheer level of unabashed commercialism and the forced "happiness and cheer" that people wouldn't give for the rest of the year...I consider every Christmas I get through without opening my wrists to be a minor success. This year, I've even let my family know I won't be included in thier plans....just wanna be left alone to try and get through it. Watch some football and hope it all just passes by.

Sorry...you asked. I'll wait for Flag Day, thankyouverymuch.

absolutely... I too cannot be with the one I love for Christmas.... sooooo sad.....I will however get to be with Tickleuniverse the day after New Years!!! YIPPEEEEE

Dave2112, I am sorry to hear that Christmas is such a really heartbreaking and a rough terrible time for you. I am soooo sorry that you lost your son-this holiday season is a constant once a year reminder that you lost him tragically. I am sorry. I hope that soon your spirits lift and your depression lifts Dave. That is really too bad and very sad. Just know you will be in my thoughts, hope this holiday season gets better for you this year-things go great for you soon. Hugs to you...

Iris, sorry that this year, this holiday season that you are depresssed and really sad and blue about not being able to be with your honey for Christmas time this holiday season. That is the pits, really sorry to hear that. Long distance relationships are tough I know I have been in a few and they can be rough. Just know you are also in my thoughts, hope your holiday season improves and goes smooth and good for you soon.

Tickleteasing,

Hope soon your cold lifts and you feel lots better really soon and soon that your health stays good and you don't get sick again soon. Just know you also are in my thoughts.
I hope soon your sadness and seasonal holiday depression and seasonal affective disorder lets up soon and hope things get better for you. I miss you friend. Thinking of you. Hope your coughing is getting lots better. Wish I could be there for you, be there with you-give you smiles and lots of great big hugs sweetie. You are a great friend. Happy holidays to you friend. My thoughts are with all of you that lost loved ones this holiday season, or those that are feeling the blues, thinking of you-wishing you the best.

Oh and Kered sorry to hear that you lost your favorite parrot Tuffy to a stroke, that is really sad, sorry to hear that.
Just know he is not longer in pain, in a better place and in birdie parrot heaven...sorry about your loss. Hope your holiday season is a happy and a good one. Sorry you lost your parrot, your companion...that is rough. Hugs

I can't stand the holidays. I work in the shopping center of the city, and the near-panic way people move around is frustrating.

Not to mention, I would much rather choose not to celebrate them, if I could get away with it. Holidays, every year since I was a kid, have been notoriously horrible or traumatic in some way, and so far this year is no different.

And seeing all the glitter and lights, reminding me of how much I hate the holidays, is turning me into Scrooge times ten.

i think it does every year on the holidays my father gets depressed dotn know why and what causes it but it happens

I like holidays. I just don't like Xmas holidays. One more reminder of how as a world community, we so pathetically need an excuse to be nice to one another.
