Dog back from the dead

I heard a dispicable story today about a dog that was hit by a car, a cop shot it in the head to put it out of it's misery, and then the people at the pet morgue found the dog standing upright in the body bag in the freezer.
I must start by saying that there is a need for law and order, and that many brave police died on 9/11. I know there are members of the TMF who are police and former police, and I respect those who chose to make a living by enforcing law.
But I must also say that there are some people who are cops who don't have a shred of intelligence. Between this new story, as well as another incedent that took place a few years ago in New York where a cop put two Rottweilers in the trunk of the police car on a 90 degree day (the dogs obviously sufficated) I am losing faith in the average cop. What would make this moron think that it's his place to decide if somebody elses dog should be shot, especially when the dog was obviously not seriously injured. It's scary to think of some of the people that are given firearms.

LEARLAKE, Calif. (April 23) - A dog named Dosha may have as many lives as a cat.

She was hit by a car, shot in the head and kept in a freezer for two hours, but she survived and is now doing well under a veterinarian's care.

Local animal groups and the Humane Society of the United States have begun fundraising efforts to pay for her care.

Last Tuesday, Dosha was hit by a car. A Clearlake police officer reported to the scene and no one could tell him who owned the dog.

Officer Bob MacDonald shot the dog, apparently to save her the pain of her injuries. Dosha, presumed dead, was taken to Animal Control, where she was put in a freezer.

About two hours later, Denise Johnson, Animal Control's interim director, was at the impound facility and was told of the incident.

``Apparently, it was assumed dead,'' Johnson said. ``I went to the freezer and found that she was alive and cold.''

She had hypothermia and a gunshot wound, but no broken bones from the car accident, Johnson said.

Police are investigating.

People are prejudice against dogs like rottweilers and pitt bulls. Honestly, some people are downright idiots. It's not about what breed, it's how they're trained.

Limeoutsider hit the nail on the head. Some people just don't know how to care for their dogs. It's unfortunate that pet owners can't be screened for idiocy.

I hate people who buy a dog because they're suppost to be "mean" and when the dog is cute and adorable, they beat it or wahtever to make it fit it's (largely undeserved) reputation.

I say death penalty for those found guilty of animal cruelty. 😡

someone needs to get a hold of them and give them the same treatment and see how they like it! That is so damn said to , I mean the is no excuse for that! No excuse at all.😡

A few thoughts on animal cruelty...

First, in most states, pets/animals are considered possessions. Until their status is raised, laws against animal cruely are little more than misdemeanors. A few states are trying to amend current legislation to assign harsher penalties and want to call pet owners "guardians."

Second, believe it or not, a bullet is considered a humane death by some counties and is cheaper than euthanasia solutions. I can't imagine having to look into the eyes of an innocent animal and squeezing a trigger...

Third, with regard to Pitt Bulls and Rottweilers, I live in a city which once banned ownership of Pitts. We now have a "vicious dog" law - which comes down to this: if you have a dog that is known to be dangerous to people or animals, you must keep it housed/restrained at all times. It is also illegal for a veterinarian in this state to debark a vicious dog. For those of you own either of these breeds (or any other breed deemed potentially "vicious"), be forewarned. Many insurance companies are now raising home owner'sinsurance costs for those who admit they have a breed that is on the list (the list is compiled by insurance companies based on claims filled out by people who were attacked by dogs). So those dogs with a bad rep now come with a higher price tag. Personally, Pitt bulls that I've encountered are among some of the sweetest dogs out there (mind you, they probably haven't been used for fighting or they would not have survived).

By the way, we had a sad incident with a miniature Schnauzer getting loose at our airport recently and security shot the dog to prevent injury (to planes, the dog, or people I don't know which!).

I've seen sad cases of abuse and neglect. I've called the SPCA in one instance. The dog had already been euthanized and put out of its misery so there was nothing that could be done in this situation. But we were concerned when we learned that the owners not only had a newborn child, but at one other dog at home as well. The SPCA did try to investigate, but without a warrant or formal complaint from a neighbor, they were unable to inspect the property/living conditions.

While I agree with the statement about those who purchase so called vicious breeds and then treat them poorly to make them mean, I did have an amusing case when I first started practicing. This guy brings in his two male puppies for a check up. As a normal part of my puppy talk, I asked him if he planned to neuter them. He informed me that "Nah, I wanna keep 'em as mean as possible." The puppies he brought in were Newfoundlands - a breed that may lick you to death, but certainly not one of the "vicious" breeds that come to mind. But if size intimidates you, then I guess a #150+ dog running towards you might do the trick

Oh shit! Now we're in trouble. 😀
*ducks into shelter as the missiles start to fly*

Speaking as both a cop and a dog lover (who's just lost my beloved beagle Snoopy, and am now dogless for the first time in nearly 25 years) I think I'd knock the tosser out who made that sort of arbitary judgement.
Even if an animal appears to be suffering after a car acident (for example) no-one but a qualified vetinary surgeon should decide on whether the dog is beyond hope. For anyone to take that responsibility on themselves, no matter how well intentioned, is decidedly dumb-arsed. Visible injuries may well be less dangerous than they look and conversely an apparenly uninjured dog may not be long for this world because of internal injuries.

The thing to remember Wallstreet, is that cops (despite being generally wonderful, heroic and handsome) are human and are prone to human fuck-ups. (In the case of the LAPD and the Metropolitan police, more fuck-ups than the normal person.😀) No matter how stringent the entry tests are, potentially good officers will get turned down and total fucking idiots will get in.

That dogs is both unlucky and lucky. Unlucky to be run over, shot and near-frozen. Lucky that she's goddamn alive after all that!

I suppose pets are like children: They have to be disciplined in order to function in society. I can say the same for cops too. Who the hell made that hick a cop, and who the hell employed the staff at that pet mortuary? They all probably got fired for those blunders. I saw that piece on British TV News, btw.

Isn't this eerie that this happend so close to Easter. A dog coming back from the dead and all. Maybe the Messiah has returned in the form of the dog. Hurry, I need to get myself to a Church.

If Judgement Day is here you'll know because I won't be posting. (I will have been dragged to the depths of hell already.)

according to medicine, and science, man is a member of the animal family. if you disagree, then your choices are plant, and mineral. actually i could see you as a pile of schiese. or maybe rag weed.
anyway, the challange still stands, why the death penalty for an animal hurter, but not for a child killer?

Interesting question actually.

Ice I seem to remember that you were against capital punishment in the "death penalty" thread. Does that mean that your reaction to people who hurt animals was an emotive, spur of the moment thing, done with more than a pound of tongue in cheek, or were you being serious?

I never said humans werent animals, I said according to the LAW they're not. I'm not against child killers getting the death penalty I'm agaisnt executing criminals whose convictions were.............sketchy.

Im for the death penalty.
I have a neighbor who calls animal control on a dialy basis and makes up stories about my dog.
Animal Control officer came over and said that the dog was well behaved, and didnt need a leash while on my property, and found that the neighbor who had been calling was just doing it because she and my mother are feuding.
Home owners insurance hasn't gone up, was once told that it's no t affected until there is a report against my dog specifically.

I feel for you Limeoutsider. I have a friend who lives next to this guy who is constantly saying that they (my friend and his family) are out to get him. And, get this, he has multiple cameras, video and infared, pointed right at the windows of my friends house!! He's tried to get them removed since they only point at his house but everytime the police come over, the guy says he is "Surveying his property for vigilantes." The police never do anything about him (I think they're afraid of him) so my friend just keeps trying.

The moral of this bizarre story is that if someone annoys you, sometimes the best thing to do is lob a grenade through his bedroom window.

I must remember that one! 😕 😱 😱

thank you ice!

for a nice reply, you raised up a point for being a gentleman.
lime. you should make a complaint against this neighbor for harrassment. i had a similar problem with a neighbor, and on the 3rd call the building inspector read him the riot act, and told him he will be cited for harrassment if he call and complained about me again!
devineshadow, your friend should make a complaint against his neighbor for being a "peeping tom". that comes under the sexual crimes catagory. the police will listen then.
