If you've been waiting for one bitch of a werewolf movie, check out "Dog Soldiers" on DVD. Back when I was at my old job, I remember reading about this movie in the British magazine "Fortean Times", which we processed and mailed across the globe. It was a huge cult hit over there, from what I understand, and it's come to the states direct to DVD and VHS.
This film relies less on million-dollar visual effects and more on the creepy story, which had enough twists to keep you guessing until the end. What I liked about this film was it's similarity in feel to Romero's original "Night of the Living Dead"...the isolationism, the stand against the unknown, the good guys dropping off one by one until you have no idea who, if anyone, is actually going to survive.
The werewolves, while not up to today's level of CG reality, are still gruesome things to behold, and the violence level is a bit intense at times. These guys are less "Howling" and more "Company of Wolves".
The acting is superb and the cinemetography adds to the chilling feel of the whole film. So rather than waste 8 or 9 bucks to see something out of Hollywood that isn't even scary, give "Dog Soldiers" a shot. I think you'll like it.
