SEATTLE (Reuters) - A 15-year-old Washington state boy suffered serious burns when he set himself on fire trying to re-enact a stunt from MTV's controversial show "Jackass," police said on Monday.

The boy from the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, Washington, soaked his shirt in rubbing alcohol late on Friday and ignited it while his friends stood by with a video camera shooting footage they planned to sell, police and local media reported.

After suffering first-degree burns over his face and upper body, the teen-ager initially told police that someone had set his clothes on fire while he walked on a trail after attending a high school football game in Issaquah, Washington, police said.

But police later recovered a backpack containing an alcohol-soaked T-shirt, lighter fluid and a video camera.

"The stunt obviously went very wrong," Issaquah police said in a statement, adding that the boy could face obstruction of justice charges for lying about the incident, requiring extra police work.

The "Jackass" show depicting outrageous and dangerous stunts by paid actors aired on Viacom Inc.'s youth-oriented MTV in 2000 and 2001 and then was canceled. But a movie version opened in theaters three weeks ago and has raked in $53.3 million at the box office.

The movie includes the following disclaimer: "The stunts in this movie were performed by professionals, so, neither you nor your dumb buddies should attempt anything from this movie."

"We're sorry when anybody gets hurt; however, nothing like this incident described ever aired on the show or in the movie," said an MTV spokeswoman.

In 2001, "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville donned a fireproof suit covered in steaks and was set on fire to become a human barbecue. A teen-ager who tried to duplicate the stunt was hospitalized with severe burns.

Injuries allegedly tied to "Jackass" or young imitators have sparked several lawsuits against MTV and Viacom.

Last month, a California woman sued claiming she suffered spine and knee injuries when a "Jackass" cast member knocked her over after slamming himself into a lectern on a stage in a stunt filmed for a similar pilot program that never aired.

I don't know or understand why people like watching this stuff. Even if the show and movie do have disclaimers, surely the producers know that some stupid kids will try dangerous stunts. Frankly, I wouldn't be sorry if one of the "Jackass" cast members seriously hurt himself while attempting these outrageous acts. :sowrong:

I agree,

I think Jackass has to be about the WORST show on T.V. (Next to Tom Green that is!!!)

I have absolutley no sympathy for anyone who gets hurt trying these stunts themselves.

These kids are obviously idots. Anyone that stupid deserves what they get. It's natural selection!

Those lawsuits should be laughed out of court, well except the lady that got hurt during one of the 'Jackass' stunts.

I can't believe the stuff these kids are doing regarding this "Jackass" movie and shows. You know, I can see this being for adults only...like rated R for violence. I have seen it and I will admit that I have laughed at the stupid things that they have done, but setting yourself on fire? When are these movie directors, stars and all of the above going to realize that they are role models for these kids!? When are they going to realize that they are the stupid looking ones when they are being lowered into the ground because of something going awry? I have older boys and older nephews (one, unfortunately, of which would do something like this!). One way for me to stop the idiot acts is to not let my kids watch this. Just my opinion...:sowrong:

If you try to copy cat anything seen in Jack Ass then you really are a Jack Ass.

Another way to stop them is...DON'T RAISE MORONS!!!

How many working brain cells does it take to realize that if you set yourself on fire, you're gonna get burned?

I agree guiltman,

We a raising children with no boundaries on stupidity. Mostly because parents themselves act with stupidity!

Well its called natural selection. The stupid get hurt. I feel sorry for anyone who gets hurt, but if the parents did'nt raise their kids smart enuf to not do these stunts then its their faults, not the shows.

I personally never liked the tv show. I did go to see the movie though. Aside from being somewhat discusting, it was funny as hell as far as mindless humor goes.

You know, there's nothing wrong with a little mindless humor every once in a while.

MTV isn't raising our babes, we are

Humans occasionally enjoy low brow humor and slapstick, watching others get minorly hurt for some reason amuses us in certain context-the 'slipping on a banana peel' gag is older than time itself. I saw the movie and laughed like a fool, so did my spouse. In fact, so did the very diverse and rather fun audience. Sideshows and freak acts are new again, hence that '30 Seconds to Fame' show. I haven't heard about kids trying to swallow swords yet, but I'm sure we will 🙄

In my opinion and experience as a teacher and parent, we can't monitor entertainment based on what unsupervised children might do. This isn't new, my mother told me about the kids who jumped out of windows-some to their deaths-back in the '50's when 'Superman' was first aired. Children were hurt by guns in the home when 'Lone Ranger' was popular. I've always wondered where their moms were.

It's simply not up to the media to raise our babies for us. When 'Power Rangers' was new we had tons on accidents in preschools and elementary schools from all the kicking and 'pretend' battles that led to injury. We as teachers had to seriously talk to parents to get them to actively control what their children viewed and to discuss what they were watching.

Furthermore, these aren't tiny tots that are doing these foolish things, but younger and older adolescents. I'm not sure why a 14 or 15 yr old would set himself on fire becasue he saw it in a movie that CLEARLY STATED the danger, but I certainly don't blame the show. I saw that episode, Knoxville had on a professional firesuit and had experts all over the place along with disclaimers up the wazoo. Foolish no-firesuit-having teens that tried to redo it against all logic are tragic but can't be blamed on the show, IMO.

I don't mean to be harping on you ticklemebreezy, but I just thought of this.

You do realize the name of the show is "Jackass"? What kind of kid would look at a jackass and say "I want to be a jackass too"?

I don't blame the show for anything others try, and I do have a sense of humor. But I don't think what the guys on that show do is funny, and if you do, cool. Just my two. 🙂

P.S. I hope I don't come off as a jackass! 😛
