A treat to myself and my drawing muscles.
Incidentally, my 100th Deviant art submission.
Thanks for tagging along, guys.

...

Technique:
Handy ballpoint pen on random scrap of tissue paper.
Mouse colouring with Paint Shop Pro, 2000 year vintage.

...

Enjoy...?

Damn dragons! They get all the best looking warrior girls! The 100th time's a charm, Kal! Incredibly well detailed, beautifully balanced, subtly colored fantasy art! The preliminary sketchwork's a most attractive, most instructive bonus, too!

Speaking of instructive...
I thought I'd post some in-progress shots.

The earlier phases are basic colours, applied with a cruder brush.
Then I applied smoothing filters to the drawing layer to give it a watercolour quality, and merged it to the basic colour layer.
I worked shading and lighting from the merged layer up.

There are actually fewer quick and dirty tricks to this picture: a few pre-built textures for the greaves, and a couple real-life camera shots from my collection - I dabble in camera shooting too - for the background.

Compared to my other works, I tried to let colour shine over my typically heavier pencil lines.
I was aiming for softer, almost dream-like, finish.

Nice return, K. This new art of yours is very refreshing, especially the texture you used to render the dragon. Then it is interesting to know the technique you used. It's been a nifty trick I would never thought of...

Art always evolve no matter what. Will miss drawing TK art again for sure... just seeing the great works here...

I individually painted each and every scale.

First a larger spot of lighter blue, then a dash of an even lighter hue, then a smaller, off-white dot with the brightening tool.
Not unlike what you'd do if you were physically painting a gaming figure or a model.

Took quite a bit too; had to tackle it in two or three sessions in the same night, taking breaks to rest and exercise a bit.

Planning to take a longer break?
