Hi everyone!

I finally moved onto lesson number 2 of my drawing lessons, but it seems like I'm about to hit a rather annoying snag, but I'll get to that in a second.

The next lesson on the road to becoming a great artist involves learning how to use guidelines for heads and faces, learning how to draw heads, eyes, etc... And right now I'm learning about guidelines, but when I moved on a bit I hit that snag I mentioned earlier.

You see I don't just learn from the booklet I printed out, but also from a flash movie. I watch the section of the movie about what I'm learning and then do an exercise, well it turns out the flash video doesn't mention everything in the booklet. Not only that, but it seems like the booklet and flash videos are out of order. In the second part of lesson two I'm drawing heads, eyes and hair. Something we haven't even talked about. In the third lesson we learning about drawing eyes and then hair. It really doesn't make a lot of sense.

(I know I shouldn't question my flash movie teacher, but it seems a bit odd.)

The other problem I'm having is with the heads section of the booklet/flash video. They say I should draw an upside down egg, but it doesn't go into any details. It just says 'draw an upside down egg' and go from there.

So now this student has to venture off his path just to find a tutorial for heads. I need to find something that goes into a lot of details concerning them.

Well below is the picture I drew before I realized all this. I plan on practicing with guidelines until I find a good enough tutorial for heads. If anyone knows of any please let me know.

Thanks!

The head in the middle is my favorite. The head on the bottom. He wasn't supposed to look angry.

You can't really use traditional methods of drawing human proportionate heads for anime. Are you using some anime art lessons or something?

I'm using this http://www.howtodrawanime.org/

I paid $14.00 to take the course. And I'm only using a 'hope this is right' method. Seriously I have no idea how to even get started with anime styled heads. I'm trying to find a tutorial that will teach me how I can get a good start on them. All I'm being told is to draw an upside down egg and go from there, but that simpler to say than to do.

Try making your guidelines with a straightedge and a yellow pencil 😀 It helps get a concept of proportion down.

I'll do that, but the problem is I don't know how big I should make the bottom part of the head. I draw the circle real lightly, I draw the guidelines across the circle, but how big should I make the bottom part (the part that makes it look like an oval?) That's my biggest problem. I'm not sure how bit I should try and make that or where the lines should meet up when it comes to the circle.

I should probably just draw a picture to show what I mean.

You're on the right track of studying anatomy or humans first before other things.

You can try drawing from life too. You can either go out with your pencils/boards paper or let someone pose as model for you. It is good to draw from life. Just doodle. Copy things as is even if you don't get it perfect..

You can also go to art galleries. It can inspire.

I was thinking that was my best option. Print a bunch of pictures off my computer and just draw. I'm thinking this art school thing isn't going to help me like it promised it would. Me having to find another tutorial just to make up for the lack of information this website promised is proof enough.

Seriously though thanks for the advice. It's very good and helpful.

Photographs are good tools, but the amount of distortion (lens effects) make human anatomy actually shorter when you are viewing angles that has foreshortening. Seriously, this has been part of what I learned. Pictures can't be that very helpful for beginner's anatomy skills, other than reference. It's either you learn the basic lines, master them first or copy from life.
