Well it's not exactly a school and I'm not exactly surprised it's hard. As DA artists will tell you, "there are no shortcuts or magic words that will make you a great artist." Yeah... That information is rarely needed. I mean seriously if people thought there were shortcuts and magic words would they really be going to forums asking for help? No!
Sorry. Rant mode.
Well on to topic. I've just started walking down the long, bumpy road to becoming a great (or passable) artist. Today I spent almost 4 hours drawing lines, triangles, squares and circles. The idea is to get better at drawing by doing this freehand. Also I wasn't allowed to use my eraser either. I just had to make the shape better using my pencil and then moving on.
The hardest shape I had a problem drawing was the triangle, but after a while they started looking better and better so I moved on. At the end I was drawing 3D shapes.
The drawing lessons are actually done rather nicely. First you print off this 108 page booklet. And then you go to this website that has a flash player movie set up. You click on each lesson. Hear an explanation and then do an exercise. After that you move on.
This is one of those things where the progress made actually comes from your ability to be realistic about your own work. You have to be hard on yourself or you won't improve. Also you can't skip lessons. I went through the introduction part of the lesson and found out I was supposed to draw a 'before' drawing. That drawing is supposed to be used to compare the progress you made when you reach the last assignment. Thankfully I drew it before I started the lesson.
What I really like about this thing is you can send in your drawings to the owners and they will rate it and give instructions on how to improve. It's nice.
I plan on sticking with each lesson for about two weeks (Going over everything until I'm satisfied with the results.). I really want to become a great artist so I'm willing to bust my butt for it.
Oh and here's my 'Before' Drawing. I wish I knew I could change the contrast of the drawing before I made the lines darker.
Oh and don't laugh at her misshaped boobs.
