Drawing School Is Hard!

Well it's not exactly a school and I'm not exactly surprised it's hard. As DA artists will tell you, "there are no shortcuts or magic words that will make you a great artist." Yeah... That information is rarely needed. I mean seriously if people thought there were shortcuts and magic words would they really be going to forums asking for help? No!

Sorry. Rant mode.

Well on to topic. I've just started walking down the long, bumpy road to becoming a great (or passable) artist. Today I spent almost 4 hours drawing lines, triangles, squares and circles. The idea is to get better at drawing by doing this freehand. Also I wasn't allowed to use my eraser either. I just had to make the shape better using my pencil and then moving on.

The hardest shape I had a problem drawing was the triangle, but after a while they started looking better and better so I moved on. At the end I was drawing 3D shapes.

The drawing lessons are actually done rather nicely. First you print off this 108 page booklet. And then you go to this website that has a flash player movie set up. You click on each lesson. Hear an explanation and then do an exercise. After that you move on.

This is one of those things where the progress made actually comes from your ability to be realistic about your own work. You have to be hard on yourself or you won't improve. Also you can't skip lessons. I went through the introduction part of the lesson and found out I was supposed to draw a 'before' drawing. That drawing is supposed to be used to compare the progress you made when you reach the last assignment. Thankfully I drew it before I started the lesson.

What I really like about this thing is you can send in your drawings to the owners and they will rate it and give instructions on how to improve. It's nice.

I plan on sticking with each lesson for about two weeks (Going over everything until I'm satisfied with the results.). I really want to become a great artist so I'm willing to bust my butt for it.

Oh and here's my 'Before' Drawing. I wish I knew I could change the contrast of the drawing before I made the lines darker.

Oh and don't laugh at her misshaped boobs.

You've definitely got talent. The background consists of only three squares and a sign yet I can instantly tell she's in a box factory.

The most i can manage is a stick figure. No artistic ability at all here. Good luck. 🙂

Thanks!

I've never given this any real thought until here lately. I really want to become a great artist.

So thanks for the luck!

Like everyone else said, keep at it. There is great satisfaction in sharing a person vision with others through art. It's the cure for that whole "If only others could see in my brain." Drawing and painting will always be "hard" for me. I take it as a journey instead of a destination. Until the day i croak i'll be trying hard to master some style or form. But from what I see you've got a good solid start here. Oh, and if you ever need any help with something, shoot me a PM. I may not be an artist, per se, but I'm like a walking art textbook.

... I had such different expectations when I opened this thread.

I personally have always wanted to go to art school. 😀 But then that'd be alot of time spent in a field I likely couldn't get work in anyways

Thank you!

I know exactly what you mean when you say,
"If only others could see in my brain"
Every artist I've worked with have always managed to miss what I was going for. I know they tried their hardest and they are extremely talented, but they can't read minds or see the pictures I'm forming in mine.

I will keep at this. I really want this to work.

lol great picture.

I've thought about searching for one, but I didn't know where I could go or how much it would cost. Or even if they would teach me what I wanted to learn. The same goes for those 'How to draw' art books. I mean they have so many. And a ton of them are written for those who already know how to draw.

It's frustrating.

The hardest part for me was getting started. I didn't know what I should start with. I guess I could have just drawn like I did today, but I work better with some structure.

OMG !! It's Mondy and her weinerdog!...:bubbleheart:

I have made great use out of these tutorials (if you're interested in this sort of thing).

Also, likely you'll have books at your library by Lee Ames. He does very good step by step instructions. It was my very first How To book.

Thanks! I bookmarked the page. I know the lesson I'm taking now will only take me so far. I'll also go to my library tomorrow and see if they have any of those books.

Thanks!

Oh, and one last thing and I PROMISE I'll shut up. Have you considered posting on an oekaki bbs?
