Believe it or not (old eighties song lyric for us old timers out there) i am probably the only all american male who does not own a dvd player yet. My freinds keep bugging me to get one for the special features in the dvd media and because the porn is of high quality. anyway i had a few questions and was wondering if some of the great posters on this super forum could help a fellow poster out.

1) do most dvd players have a coaxial cable out to go directly to tv that is not stereo?

2) can i plug a dvd player into my vcr using the one audio in and video in that is on the back of my vcr?

3) what does progessive scan really mean?

4) if i do not have a plasma or hdtv will the picture still be better on a dvd than a vcr?

5) if the dvd player says it can read cd-r media does this mean i can burn all my tickle clips to a disk and watch them on a television through the magic of my dvd player?

6) how are zenith dvd players?

7) what are the best and worst reasons to own a dvd player?

8) is dvd old technology that will be replaced quickly like the beta max and vcr were?

any answers would be very helpful to the hollywood brother indeed my brothers and sisters. I am not a big movie buff and even though i bought tons of movies on vhs i hardly watch them so i am not very gung ho on a dvd player. however depending on the answers that i recieve from the thousands and thousands of poster here, i may obtain a zenith dvd player model dvb-132

Get a DVD player! You wont regret it!

1) do most dvd players have a coaxial cable out to go directly to tv that is not stereo?

Yep. Make sure you confirm that though before buying.

2) can i plug a dvd player into my vcr using the one audio in and video in that is on the back of my vcr?

Yep. If in doubt, go to Radio Shack. They have every cable you'll ever need.

3) what does progessive scan really mean?

No clue.

4) if i do not have a plasma or hdtv will the picture still be better on a dvd than a vcr?

OH yes!!! WAY better! And it's MUCH easier to find widescreen movies on dvd than vhs.

5) if the dvd player says it can read cd-r media does this mean i can burn all my tickle clips to a disk and watch them on a television through the magic of my dvd player?

Yep. You may have to make sure it is in Mpeeg-2 format though which may require special software.

6) how are zenith dvd players?

I have a Go.Video. Not great but inexpensive.

7) what are the best and worst reasons to own a dvd player?

Special features are awesome. A lot of movies come with deleted scenes which is great and many have feature commentaries by actors, directors, etc. VERY cool. Also not having to rewind is much cooler than it sounds. It's the little things that make a difference. I like to not only watch a movie but really experience it and stuff like that gives you a lot more insight. Some movies dont have many special features though so if it's not great save your money and get it on vhs. But the special features on the Lord of the Rings Deluxe Editions justcant be beat.
I really cant think of any reasons vhs would be better than dvd unless as I said the special features arent good on a particular dvd. That Thing You Do is one of our favorite movies but the special features are almost nil so we stuck with vhs even though it isnt widescreen.

8) is dvd old technology that will be replaced quickly like the beta max and vcr were?

Highly doubtful. DVD has been around for ages now and I think it's been long enough that we can safely say it will be the standard for a good long time. Especially now that people can burn their home movies, tv shows, etc to DVD.

Sorry for the long answer!!

LOTR Extended DVD's

quote from Nessonite:
the special features on the Lord of the Rings Deluxe Editions justcant be beat.

Hey...I'm with ya on that...they ROCK..!!

Anyone here into the X-Files...??

for my PC...I've got the InterVideo WinDVD decoder...and I really like it...as far as watching DVD's on my computer go's...it can't be beat...the clarity is spectacular...but you need a good video card for it...!!

thank you for your responses. i figured it worth it for the special features. as far as the dvd media itself, when you go out and let say buy lord of the rings or whatever movie. how many times a day can you watch the movie, the director commentary and all the easter eggs with special features?

the reason i ask is i look at my cd collection. i provbably poured over 3000.00 into it. the sad part is half those cds i got tired of quickly. i am wondering if dvd is the same thing.

the friends that i have who own dvd players pay lots of money and brag aobut movie collections. yet they watch it a few times and then movie collects dust

thbe x-files rules. lots of good cast members like thbe captain from 21 jump street, the dude that played skinner and burt reynolds to name a few. the plots were always good but did they really have to kill cigarette smoking man who probably was mulder's dad and may not of been pure evil as earlier thought

You have a valid point there. There are DVDs that I have that I watched the special features for and probably wont get into them again for a good long time. But I've alwyas been really into the "behind the scenes" stuff and thats not really something you watch over and over and over but it's really cool just to have seen it. Some movies, Lord of the Rings Deluxe Editions for example, are so well done, complicated, and involved, that I haved watched many of the features several times. Unfortunately I cant get The Two Towers Deluxe Edition bonuc DVDs to play on my player! Wahh!
Another thing that they are starting to do is (I keep using LOTR as an example!) is slip the deleted scenes right into the movie which is awesome!
The feature commentary is a fantastic feature to have especially on movies that you may already have on vhs that you're really into. American Pie 2 for instance has something like 6 different commentaries and I've seen them all. 😀
I bought the Snow White Special Edition DVD for my daughter and even on ancient movies like that (1937) they managed to put a feature commentary on it using old radio interviews as well as modern. Space Balls (one of my favorite movies) has a commentary by Mel Brooks that they had made for the laser disc.
Of course some movies that SHOULD have great special features actually really suck. Harry Potter (1 and 2) for instance was only worth getting the DVD to got it in widescreen and a couple of deleted scenes. Other than that the special features are really lame.
I find myself at the movie store looking at the special features lists on all the DVDs like you look at nutrition information at the grocery store. 😛

cool thanks for the advice and the answrs ness. you always seem to come through for everyone here

I have a question:

If I buy a japanese, DVD, ( not the player, the actual disk), will it play in my DVD player? And can I read what they're saying in english subtitles?

Thanx!

i dont see why not..it should play with the subtitles..i have had couple imported disks in my dvd and i was able to read the subtitles to it..

I dont know much about international DVDs but I think most players you buy are multi-zone.

I was just wondering cuz it's a Japanese DVD that I want, but I can only order it off of Amazon, and I was questionable about it.

Amazon should say in the description what zone the DVD is in. Unless it states that it cant be played on Maerican DVD players then I would assume that it can be. Their customer base is primarily American so they'd warn you if you couldnt play it.

once again ness thank you for your insight. i was also wondering if i download a tickle clip from here that is a mpeg how will it look once i burn to a cd-r and put it in the dvd player

It would have to be MPEG2 rather than a regular MPEG. You can do this with video editing software but I'm not sure which ones. I dont know much about that as I dont have a dvd burner and have never tried to make a video cd. My brother said something about having a program that will do this. I'll ask him next time I speak with him.

thanks ness. i am thinking it would be nice to watch the clips that are posted on this site on my 25inch tv instead of a small monitor
