So I have a DVD-R that I'm trying to play with my DVD-ROM drive. When I play it, though, there is no sound with the DVD. Sound and picture work fine in standard TV DVD players, though, so what gives? Did I miss a codec somewhere?

I have something called PCFriendly DVD for my computer, and it plays DVDs fine, but there is no sound with some DVD-Rs.

I don't know what the problem is exactly but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the PCFriendly DVD program? Sometimes that fixes the trouble. That's all I know, sorry.

Sorry, Tickled Orange ...just saw this thread.

Who is the manufacturer of your DVD drive? The DVD may not be totally compatible with your drive. This DVD +/- problem is gradually going away (sorta like the old dual modem standard for us old timers), but it will still be around for some of the older DVDs.

General rule of thumb:

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R and DVD+RW formats are supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha and others.

DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM
These formats are supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp.

You should go the web site where the company is & see if there is a patch or an upgrade. You can also send them an e mail to their Tech Support for issues like this.

Thanks, guys. There is no patch for it (so far, I haven't found one.) Besides, I have an eMachines, so it just has a CD-RW and a DVDRom, but no DVD +/- R in it.

Oh, and I'll never call Tech Support for anything electronic or otherwise. I always get some guy who doesnt understande the Engrish that we all speak.
