I decided to start a thread, purely because I'm curious about something.

How many people actually do like, the whole religious Easter stuff? Like, eating fish only on Good Friday, no meat, and all of that jazz, and how many people just see it as "That time where we eat chocolate!"

I'm atheist, so I purely use it as a date to stuff my face with chocolate and have an excuse, but I'm curious as to how many people still uphold the actual tradtions of Easter.

On a side note, Happy Easter, and to a greater extent, happy 4/20! Hyde Park was buzzin'.

Christian here, but not terribly Orthodox--didn't go to church for it this year (slept far too late for that >_> )-I do see it at the whole Christ raising deal and a day to be grateful.

Also a day to wear bright colors and stuff my face, naturally 😛

Christian here, went to church, but still rely on Cadbury creme eggs. 😛
Didn't do the other stuff, though.

Regardless, HAPPY EASTER to everyone! All the best catching chocolate-easter-egg-pooping bunnies. 😉

Aside from the monstrous amount of chocolate eating. Apparently people make a habit of visiting the super market the day prior to stock up on enough groceries to last a nuclear winter.

Public holiday only lasts for a day god damnit. Just because the shops are closed for a day doesn't mean you should do that.

Any holiday is an excuse for us to eat as much as we want, and not be called some form of fat for it, which is great! Food for the win.

Interesting though, I know alot of people are like, grateful for it, and do remember it as such, I just, I don't know, I don't see many Christian traditions implemented anymore, it seems to be all Easter eggs.

Not that I'm a believer, just a curious atheist.

It's mainly because it's a holiday. So alot of people have the day off work, so use it as a day to stock up, meaning they don't have to bustle around their work schedule for grocery shopping. Which is what I assume most people's mindset is anyways. I don't personally do it, have weekends off anyways for that, and if not, I make my housemates who are in University do grocery shopping!

Well I'm a Christian, but my religion doesn't do the whole fish on Good Friday thing and no meat... Thankfully because I'm not a huge fish fan. And I love my meat. 😛 Today we're having Chicken, and we always have potato salad and deviled eggs... because both of those have eggs in them so that's what we do with all the eggs that were boiled the day before for coloring. Today I didn't go to church, usually I do but I couldn't get over there today. I had some of the left over chocolate that we had after the girl's baskets and fake eggs were filled with the chocolate. And although like any holiday, stuffing my face is fun... to me the resurrection of Christ (The reason Christians celebrate this holiday) is more important than the food we eat.

Christian, but skip out on the Lent stuff and the special diets. Sort of very lightly religious. Most of my extended family takes it more seriously, but I spent the morning eating food and then playing LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. So, uh, not the most religious of days.

Christian here, didn't go to church (had to work and has stop going to church for personal reasons) I believe in his death and resurrection, I believe he is in the Son of God, and that's all imma say.

My religion doesn't do the whole Lent thing. 😛

I believe it's a Catholic thing ^^ I'm Protestant but I observed it this year because I needed to stop eating Ramen noodles anyway, plus it's a nice tradition that helps you be grateful for what you have and helps you observe some self control.

It is indeed a Catholic thing... and I think Lutherans might also do it but I'm not sure.

Mine doesn't either, don't even know what that is.

It's a catholic tradition where you give up something in your life that's important to you for 40 days. It starts on Ash Wednesday (Or Clean Monday - two days before) and ends right before Easter, either on the day before Easter (Holy Saturday) or the day before Good Friday (Holy Thursday) and you don't have to give up anything on the sunday's leading up to Easter... that would be what dieting people would call "cheat days."

Would I give up takeaway food and my computer for 40 days... Hmm... No. Fuck that. Definitely staying atheist!

Interesting though, that people don't do the whole Good Friday thing, my Mum used to always make me do it when I was little, then I grew up, formed my own beliefs, and now I never do it, the only reason I thought of it, was because my housemate is Christian, and didn't eat meat on Good Friday, so I had to cook myself. (AKA, make a microwave burger 😀 )

Did your room mate not eat meat on Good Friday because of the whole belief that you shouldn't... or did your room mate not eat meat because your room mate just didn't? Lol...

I don't always eat meat.. if I didn't eat meat on Good Friday it would just be a coincidence... of course I did eat meat... had pizza Friday. 😛

And I don't think Lent is a good reason to stay an Atheist... just come join one of the religions that don't do lent... Catholics are weirdos anyways. 😛

One of my Protestant college friends does lent, but more in the spirit of healthy living than anything else. Funny thing though, this time she's giving up social media, as she's one of those ultra-addicted chronic Facebook users, but she so conveniently "forgot" to include phone notifications as part of it...utterly hopeless, sometimes. xD

I'm a Christian here and make it a point to remember what Easter is all about each year (as with Christmas), though I don't do any of those practices, save for church services. Though I do enjoy the chocolate, the eggs traditions, the bunnies, the Easter-themed tickle art (hahah), and I'm not too rattled by people treating it just as a holiday, as long as said people don't give me crap about my faith. To each their own.

Oh, and Happy Easter!! xP

Thanks, Karen. Being a Protestant as well, didn't know that either (because I didn't know what it was), though I 'do' know of the 40 days of Lent: that's for self-control, which I did not do :blush.
Watching 'The Passion' has become a sort of ritual here, the past few years.

You should really be thanking me, all she did was say it was a Catholic thing, I actually explained what it was. 😛

Protestantism is basically Catholicism slightly altered so a fat English king could divorce his wife. 😛 So it has the same sorts of practices usually, if anything, Catholicism usually takes it to the next level of devotion.

I meant though, that my housemate didn't eat meat on Good Friday, because she doesn't believe you should. Christian belief of Good Friday. I didn't, I had my microwave burger and loved it XD

I was raised in a pretty strict Irish-Catholic environment and for most of my life, I did do the whole fish on fridays, giving up certain things for Lent, etc.

As an adult, I no longer identify as Catholic and prefer to have a more agnostic view on such things. I am not so omniscient that I have the knowledge of whether there is an afterlife or not, a God or not, and I'm not smart enough to nail down anything science hasn't already. But I'm open to suggestions lol.

That said, I do have a respect for the traditions of Catholic religion and people. I don't give up anything for Lent or avoid meat on Fridays, but I do spend time with family and enjoy the day for what it really is to a lot of people when you boil it down: quality time with loved ones and good food. 🙂

That was the Church of England... and although can technically be considered part of the protestant movement, has really nothing to do with the protestant movement or breaking away from the Catholic church.

The King wanted to get divorced so he created his own church. Which by the way is better than what a king might consider before that... killing his wife.

But the protestant movement has really nothing to do with that. It was really first started by Martin Luther when he didn't agree with some of the things the Catholic church believed (Not one of them had to do with their beliefs on marriage.)

So when you think of the protestant movement... don't think it's all about some king wanting to divorce his wife because it has nothing to do with that.
