Are any forum members guilty of eating.. extra portions of low or no fat foods? I know that watching diet can be somewhat about portion control as well as food.. but lately..

I've basically stopped eating such things as Italian food, Fried Foods, Cakes, Pies, etc. I will eat Ice Cream occasionally, if there is no Frozen Yogurt in the market I shop in. However, in recent days, I find I have been eating a lot of grilled chicken, vegetables, frozen yogurt, and drinking a ton of unsweetened ice tea.

Of course, I'm also "guilty" of eating Chinese food twice a week, something I know I should cut down to once a week.

Sorry to digress. Back to the original topic.. Is eating a lot of low fat foods okay?

Let's look at one example.
Suppose you realize that grilled chicken is lower in calories than fried chicken. It is:
The yield from half a breast of chicken, fried and breaded, will be about 320 calories.
The yield from half a breast of chicken, grilled, will be about 250 calories, over 20% less.
But it you eat twice as much of the grilled chicken, you have consumed 500 calories.
So portion control is extremely important.

Understood. Thanks for the analysis.

In this case.. all I had was two small grilled chicken breasts for lunch, with a salad, so I didn't eat that much.

Not sure if you have a smart phone, I guess you can use the website if not. But myfitnesspal is great for calculating the number of calories you need to intake to meet your fitness goals. You can include your workouts too. It's great to be able to realize that discipline during the day can allow you that piece of cake at night, and still lose weight!

Portion control is huge. And I LOVE to eat. I'd mitigate that by eating LOTS of fiber....first. Spinach or romaine salad with fat free dressing before I ate my meals. Lots of water. Fiber bars throughout the day. Whole grain this and that. It not only saves you calories...but it clears you out too. Good luck!

It's either portions or a low carb diet if you can't control your appetite. With a low carb diet you don't even worry about fat content in diet. Your bad blood numbers will still normalize because you burn fat on a low carb diet. Go to the Atkins site, it explains this. All these diets are tough and they all work initially to some degree because you are aware of what you are putting in your mouth. Even that Twinkie diet works, initially.

I've been on a supposedly low carb diet since 2005. I cheat of course.

I love salad, but if I ate fiber bars I'd be sick to my stomach.

I think the most important thing is not low fat or low carbs or low this-and-that, but just to eat sensibly: good portion control and lots of unprocessed foods.

Remember it's salad with no fat/no (low) cal dressing. It's not bad...but it's no where near as delicious as the normal salads with the delicious fatty dressings. The fiber bars and the salads are just techniques to get fuller faster so I don't eat as much. Fiber 1 makes great tasting fiber bars. 2 will take care of your daily need.

I say eat what you wish and workout a lot! Harder said than done I know but, food is one of our greatest pleasures in life! Learn how to cook delicious healthy meals, splurge when you want and sweat A LOT! Its a healthy balance don't stress too much about diet. Just exercise!

I don't exactly eat what I want. I try to watch it. The biggest form of real exercise that I get are long walks. The main street here, and the subway, are big, long blocks away, so I do that quite often.

I could never eat 2 fiber bars, let alone one. If I did that, I'm telling you I'd be sick lol.

If you are a diabetic or borderline diabetic the vegan diet will raise your bad blood numbers if you don't go low carb also. Low carb is good if you want to drop 20 or 30 quickly, but you can't cheat.
