editing clips- I've hit a wall

I appreciate the help, in advance, as I'm unable to edit certain clips I'd like to post. Whomever so dare to become embroiled in this matter can take solace in the fact that you are actually aiding the community- afterall, I have the clips and they play fine- I'm just looking to share them with everyone else.

One of the mainstream clips I wish to edit is, I believe, in AVI format. I have been using Honestech Easy Video Editor succefully to edit WMV files. However, AVI files return a message "This file format is not valid or not exist CODEC!" when I attempt to open then in the video editor. The message appears to be in English 😉 . I've tried downloading various codecs but nothing has worked so far. Does anyone have any ideas? Adding to the comedy, I downloaded a copy of Virtual Dub yesterday and it accepted the AVI file. However, after editing what was originally a 1.34MB file, it delivered a 120MB 'edited' file to my desktop. Try splitting that and posting it to the TMF! And the video clocked in at a lengthy 8 seconds. Quite honestly, I'd really like to avoid learning what looks to be a confusing piece of software (especially since the Honestech editor is so simple). I also tried Magix movie edit pro, which didn't recognize the file, and a few programs which didn't work with my system at all.

One autre question- is anyone aware of software that edits MOV files (Quicktime format)? Thanks again for your help, and I apologize for requesting involvement in such silly matters. One of the nice things about this forum is the fact that there's always plenty of people that know a lot more than I do about technical stuff. Otherwise, we'd really be in trouble!

If it is an AVI file it is nearly 100% likely that it falls into one of two catagories: First, it is a Windows AVI file and thus you have the codec if you have WIndows. The other, more likely possibility is that it is a Divx AVI. To see, try grabbing the Divx codec at http://www.divx.com/.

As to editors, well, there are more knowledgable souls than I out there. HDS does little to no editing of video files.

Thanx for taking the time to help out, HDS. I appreciate it. I definitely have the Divx 521 bundle on my drive. I had used the player to play the clip (it does not play with the Window Media Player), so I would classify it as a Divx AVI file. I also changed the clip's 'open with' under the property menu to the Divx player to open the clip in the Honestech editor to no avail. The clip also plays with the Media Classic Player and VLC player, but Honestech still won't recognize it. I downloaded various codecs to solve the problem but haven't had any luck, yet. Maybe, if I can get WMP to play it, I'll be able to edit it. At any rate, thanx again for your help 🙂 .

It can import avi, wmv and mpg files.

Ulead Video Studio 10 looks promising too. You can get a free trial of it too at http://tucows.com . 😎

Thanx for pitching in, Rajee. I eventually figured out how to work Virtual Dub, which is a good piece of software and handles the AVI files which Honestech cannot. Between the two of them, and some conversion software, things have been going relatively smoothly :bump:
