Forwarded to me, and pretty interesting, especially the unbiased educational stats........

Subject: Who's Smarter?

Who's Smarter? Let's compare the resumes and education of both those in the Administration, and also of the big mouth celebrities that criticize them.

The Hollywood crowd is at it again: holding anti-war rallies, screaming about the Bush Administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming the President and his Cabinet every chance they get, to anyone and everyone who will listen. They publicly defile our officials and call them names like "stupid", "morons", and "idiots".

So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country? Let's look at the biographies of these "stupid", "ignorant", "moronic" leaders,
and then at those of the celebrities who are castigating them:

President George W. Bush:
Received a Bachelors Degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until 1986. He was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998 winning 68.6 percent of the vote. In 1998 Governor Bush won 49 percent of the Hispanic vote, 27 percent of the African-American vote, 27 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of women. He won more Texas counties, 240 of 254, than any modern Republican other than Richard Nixon in 1972 and is the first Republican gubernatorial
candidate to win the heavily Hispanic and Democratic border counties of El Paso, Cameron and Hidalgo.

Someone began circulating a false story about his I.Q. being lower than any other President. If you believed it, you might want to go to
www.urbanlegends.com and see the truth.)

Vice President Dick Cheney:
Earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966, both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political Science Association congressional fellowship. One of Vice President Cheney's primary duties is to share with individuals, members of Congress and foreign leaders, President Bush's vision to strengthen our economy, secure our homeland and win the War on Terrorism. In his official role as President of the Senate, Vice President Cheney regularly goes to Capital Hill to meet with Senators and members of the House of Representatives to work on the Administration's legislative goals.

In his travels as Vice President, he has seen first hand the great demands the war on terrorism is placing on the men and women of our military, and he is proud of the tremendous job they are doing for the United States of America.

Secretary of State Colin Powell:
Educated in the New York City public schools, graduating from the City
College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY and received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in June 1958. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration Degree from George Washington University. Secretary Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations.

Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of
Freedom, the President's Citizen's Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and other institutions have been named in his honor and he holds honorary degrees from universities and colleges across the country. (Note: He retired as Four Star General in the United States Army!)

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld:
Attended Princeton University on Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as a Naval aviator; Congressional Assistant to Rep. Robert Griffin (R-MI), 1957-59; U.S. Representative, Illinois, 1962-69; Assistant to the President, Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, Director of the Cost of Living Council, 1969-74; U.S. Ambassador to NATO, 1973-74; head of Presidential Transition Team, 1974; Assistant to the President, Director of White House Office of Operations, White House Chief of Staff, 1974-77; Secretary of Defense, 1975-77.

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge:
Raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his Law Degree and was in private practice before becoming Assistant District Attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.

National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice:
Earned her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. (Note: Riceenrolled at the University of Denver at the age of 15, graduating at 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science Cum Laude). She earned a Master's Degree at the University of Notre Dame and a Doctorate from the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies. Both of her advanced degrees are also in Political Science.

She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Morehouse College in 1991, the University of Alabama in 1994, and the University of Notre Dame in 1995. At Stanford, she has been a member of the Center for International Security and Arms Control, a Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Studies, and a Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era
(1986) with Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army (1984). She also has written numerous articles on Soviet and East European foreign and defense policy, and has addressed audiences in settings ranging from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Moscow to the Commonwealth Club, to the 1992 and 2000 Republican National Conventions.

>From 1989 through March 1991, the period of German reunification and the final days of the Soviet Union, she served in the Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior Director, of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the
Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1997, she served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender Integrated Training in the Military. She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. She was a Founding Board member of the Center for a New Generation, an educational support fund for schools in
East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, California and was Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula.

In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition and KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco. Born November 14,
1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, she resides in Washington, D.C.

So now, who are these celebrities? What is their education? What is their experience in affairs of State or in National Security? While I will defend to the death their right to express their opinions, I think that if they are going to call into question the intelligence of our leaders, we should alsohave all the facts on their educations and background:

Barbra Streisand: Completed high school. Career: Singing and acting
Cher: Dropped out of school in 9th grade. Career: Singing and acting
Martin Sheen: Flunked exam to enter University of Dayton. Career: Acting
Jessica Lange: Dropped out college mid-freshman year. Career: Acting
Alec Baldwin: Dropped out of George Washington U. after scandal. Career:
Acting
Julia Roberts: Completed high school. Career: Acting
Sean Penn: Completed High school. Career: Acting
Susan Sarandon: Degree in Drama from Catholic University of America in
Washington, D.C. Career: Acting
Ed Asner; Completed High school. Career: Acting
George Clooney: Dropped out of University of Kentucky. Career: Acting
Michael Moore: Dropped out first year University of Michigan. Career:
Movie Director
Sarah Jessica Parker: Completed High School. Career: Acting
Jennifer Anniston: Completed High School. Career: Acting
Mike Farrell: Completed High school. Career: Acting
Janeane Garofalo: Dropped out of College. Career: Stand up comedienne
Larry Hagman: Attended Bard College for one year. Career: Acting

While assessing the education and experience of these two groups, we should bear in mind that President Bush and his cabinet are briefed daily, even hourly, on the War on Terror and threats to our security.

They are privy to information gathered around the world concerning the
Middle
East, the threats to America, the intentions of terrorists and
terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot believe that we are in any way as informed as our leaders.

These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country.

They only have a deep-seated hatred for all things Republican. By nature, and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative views and anything that supports or uplifts the United States of America.

The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a
pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum, or when he attacked the Bosnian Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was heard from Hollywood.

Yet now, after our nation has been attacked on its own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed, by freedom-hating terrorists, while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against the war. Why the change?

There's more, but it's decidely partisan, and repetitive, so I cut it. Let the facts speak loudly for themselves without any rhetoric. Q

Great post Q!!!..........

......I agree with your asessment regarding the political bias, even if you cut that part out it makes uncomfortable reading for the Hollywood "lovies".

This stuff about Bush being a dim wit, if you listen to it long enough you start to believe it. Its largely based on the indisputable fact that he is not very articulate, and is prone to making a fool of himself especially when trying to shoot from the hip in press conferances, and is certainly no match for the likes of Clinton in those situations.

However having a slick line in off the cuff dialogue, and an ability to produce neat, cute, soundbites, while clearly desirable for any politician in order to get elected, and to maintain good press and public relations, is not much use when you find youself sitting in the White House with your advisors and officials all wanting answers and decisions about massive subjects affecting the whole country, and at the moment many other countries.

Hands up anyone who wants to see Barbera Striesand in the White House?....er...nope.

Comparing the education of politicians and government officials to that of celebrities is fair? Whoever wrote this is just as biased as the Hollywood crowd.

Bless you Q for saying proving what I have been saying for quite some time....the celebs really don't have a clue when it comes to world events........

Great post Q. This is something I have been trying to point out as well.

Interesting that all of the celebs in question were liberal & anti war

It would be interesting to see the educational backgrounds of conservative celebs, just for comparison purposes. Charleton Heston, Arnold, Kevin Kostner, Reagan. Etc. Btw, neither W nor Gore were that stellar as students. Both were mostly B/C students. Whereas both Clinton and Bill Bradley were Rhodes Scholars. Of course, scholastic ability and emotional maturity are two different things in the case of Clinton.

Great post Q!
fing02.gif
And so true!!!!!

AMK, you've gotta be kidding me?? Right?

The whole point is that the people who use their hollywood status to object to the current action are without the education and thereby, in my opinion, necessary intelligence, to make such decisions. I'm not saying they are wrong to hold such opinions, I'm just agreeing with the article in that, if they want to be taken seriously as a unit of policy makers, then they should get some credentials other than the Rocky Horror Picture Show, ER, and Hello Dolly to back them up.

The other side of the "intelligence and education" issue here is that there is an active assumption that if you support the current war, you have no empathy for others. That you lack the "love of human-kind" that the actors and comedians seem to have exclusive hold on.

I'd dare say that well educated people tend to have a grasp of the human condition as much as those who spend their time pretending in front of cameras. *GASP* Maybe even moreso as getting a formal education often depends more on getting along with fellow humans than simply working toward a goal of self-reach.

Oh yeah....a couple more tidbits about Condolezza Rice. She's a concert pianist who speaks 4 languages!:bowing:

It certainly is when said celebrities are busily referring to said politicians as "morons" and "idiots..." Refutation of such spurious assertions is perfectly fair.

Compared...I dared.

Just as I would likely take it with the proverbial grain of salt should a politician recommend a movie to me, so do I take movie stars suggestions on foreign affairs and policy. We're all entitled to an opinion, but in certain cases, not all opinions are equal. I don't argue with an experienced plumber regarding his specialty, why do we think it's correct to formulate and hurl our uneducated amateurish opinions on other subjects? There's times when an intelligent citizen defers to experience and knowledge. Sadly, we sometimes can't differentiate between talent and wisdom. Q

Exactly! I will grant the Sarandon, Baldwin, Sheen, et cetera, know more about acting than I do. More than likely, they know who is screwing whom in the entertainment industry.

Judging from their public statements, they know very little about anything else.

Nice post, Q. 🙂

You beat me to posting the question about hollywood and past foreign adventures. Can I expand on this by asking where were ANY protests while Clinton ordered raids and/or attacks in Haiti,Serbia,Sudan, or Somalia? If one wants to look into oil-for-money conspiracies, the incident concerning Somalia has more substance than Iraq.

Q has opened a good debate here.....

.......I get very annoyed with film and pop stars who in my veiw abuse their newly attained high profile to give us the benifitt of their wisdom. Its interesting to notice the point at which they decide they are famous enough to start bombarding us with their naieve teenage political views. I wonder what triggers it? is it when your bank balance reaches a certain level? or when you reach a certain number of fellow celebs you can call friends? who knows, but the fact remains that just because you appear in films or write catchy pop tunes and every one recognises you, does not make your political views any more valid then mine or any other average joe.

The truth is more likely to be that my view, and most other peoples views, out side of Hollywood or a Sony record contract, are of more value, as we dont have our heads stuck our arses all day. Most of these celebs have no record as political activists or social commentators prior to their celebrity status, so what makes them think that professional success on a personal, selfish basis, gives them previously undiscovered powers of debate on world politics and economics? do we expect a top ranking surgeon or chemist to start gassing off on the telly about his political views, and more to the point would anyone listen? and why do we listen to pop stars opinions on these type of subjects?

We are all of course fully entitled our views, and we have the right to air them (unless you live in Iraq) but the fact you play in a band called, say, "Cold Play" and sing in a high irritating voice, and have a millionair life style, does NOT mean you are worth listening to on any subect other than the state of your own bank balance.

Oh by the way mistress......er......sorry i mean Jo Belle, your post was very good.

I got this from a friend, too. First of all, they left a lot of stuff out (Mike Farrel was a Marine and Larry Hagman was in the Air Force, for example. Garafalo left college to care for her dying mother...that type of thing.) Lots of stuff ...like Bush & his cabinet make more than Sean Penn does in a year; as they are MY employees they should support ME; it was oil that got Bush where he is today, & we're so concerned with the Mid East because of oil; the fact that we are allowed, even supposed to make as much money as we can in this country is deemed a good thing (and I hope to be in that situation someday..): it was Reagan/Schultz/North that got Iraq turned against us after selling wepons to the enemy nation of Iran; I don't have to see a celeb's film or t.v show if I disagree with them, but whether or not I voted for a candidate, their deciscions can bring big bad mojo on me and I have no control over it, while Hollywood's opinions don't really get anyone killed; Colin Powel joined the military because there were few other options for a young black man at that time - he also supports affirmative action unlike Bush and he spoke out about it, which in the current climate is about as close as actual treason in the opinions of some as can be. Advisers are not always right, or are sometimes ignored. It was a short decade ago that the DC insiders & career politicians that were the bad guys who were out of touch with the public & it was the "right" that was anti-government and spawned the milita/Tim McVey types. Jennifer Aniston ain't killed no one. That we know of.

But more importantly, why would I CARE about ANY of these people? Hollywood or DC, I have my own stuff to do.

And I support what we are doing in Iraq - so ha! It's the lack of reasoned debate on either side that inflames my nipples. All red and rosey.....

I saw them - what channel were you watching? Except anything on Somalia, and that was more about debate than protesting. And the U.S. went in there to feed the people, not go to war with 'em. And when it came down to warfare, the U.S. pulled out rather than free them from the warlords.

I didn't see much of anything in the way of protests, especially of the magnitude we are seeing today, which is why I asked if there were any.

All I said was that the "real reasons" for Somalia are just as much doubted by some as are the "real reasons" for Iraq today. There were plenty of other nations who had troubles with sick and starving populations, but they didn't have the oil reserves and uranium deposits.I am asking why there wasn't so much widespread protesting about it,and there's no way the publicity on these two matters is comparable.

As far as pulling out of Somalia, you'd have to ask the Clinton administration why they did it.It might have something to do with his idea of nation building for a people who didn't want his idea, or an approach that wasn't proper for the task.

I don't want to stray away from topic too far,but Fox News had an interesting interview this evening about a future government in Iraq.

Another theory about protests then and now could be media coverage, too.I'll buy that in a second.

Truely sorry - no personal slam intended or meant. If I was a better writer, I'd work for the WWE.

I think there were less protest then because A.) It seemed like it really was the right ting to do then (ie, there was no real American advantage to going into Bosnia, but there was genocide going on. At the same time Schindler's List was making a spash, it would be hard to argue against stopping genocide. In Somalia, people were starving, oil and uranium aside. But there was a real threat, so the military did the feeding, not the Red Cross.)

B.) Post 9/11, the equal and opposite reactions the actions of the U.S. seem much more far reaching, scarier and ominpresent. People who want the war want it to end with such threats completely eradicated. People who don't want the war fear such an attemp to completely eradicate terror in a U.S. backed invasion of a Muslim country fear it would make such things worse. Both sides seem more desperate today to get their points across, and emotion runs high. That always makes for good t.v.

OK, I guess my last post was misunderstood. Of course celebrities aren't knowlegeable about foreign affairs and government policy, I never said they were. My point is how educated you are doesn't depend on your political affiliation, and vice versa. There are many liberals, especially in the academic world, who are highly educated, and there are a lot of blue-collar conservatives as well. That's all I was trying to say.

And take into account how many early presidents ands other such leaders in the U.S. were self taught to a great extent.

There was a great story in my local paper about "What is patriotism?" Was the South more or less Patriotic thant he North in the Civil War? Was questioning policy that might send people off to die or make bad problems worse more or less patrioctic than backing policy of the U.S. no matter what? And there were some great quotes from U.S. citizens who came to the U.S. from other parts of the world, and what their take on patriotism was, from it being totally manufactured by propaganda, to it being useless, to it being core to who you were as an individual and as a countryman.

What's irksome is people who say things like "They have a right to their oppinion but I wish they'd keep it to themselves. What right do they have to dictate how we live?"

Um...maybe... as much as you, and they aren't telling you to pipe down & keep quiet. Washington, Hollywood - they both have so little to do with me to begin with.....
