Employment

Aside from the military, I'm computer literate and have clerical experience. I looked up what my army training qualifies me for, and it said pyrotechnics coordinator... Is Whitesnake still touring?

So do places just not hire anyone for anything anywhere anymore? Geeeez..
Nope. Unless you can find a job with some politician's relative who has set up a phony company with green jobs with money loaned by the federal government, you will have great difficulty finding a job. 🙁

It's times like this that make me want to be a freelance superhero, like in Kick Ass.

I've been trying as well.

The sad thing is that the entry level positions that are available get filled by people with degrees.

It's like, come on, guys. You have a degree. Go fuckin' use it. There was a part-time job at a library in my town that was open a few months ago, and the basic premise of the job was to keep the computers in the library from crapping out. Easy enough, right?

It got filled by someone with a Bachelor's degree in computer science.

Well I been trying to start my own company but that is not going all that well. So I was seeing if there were some college teaching jobs open near where I live so I could work and earn money and be close enough to still keep an eye on my parents. All the places close by had no positions or the positions had already filled up really fast.

I'm almost tempted to go back into the military

Probably not a bad idea, overall.

I've considered it myself... but I simply don't have the aptitude for that kind of thing, and it's not something that you can just quit halfway through.

I'd tell you to become a truck driver, but I am not so sure doing that for a living is a good thing anymore.

I've used some of my GI Bill, but haven't gotten a degree yet. It seems if I were a truck driving nurse I'd have no problem finding work lol

Good. Get that degree! And get the degree in a field that's hiring for pete's sake! I'm glad to hear that you're making use of it though.

For sure. I know a few of my friends in the service were big drawers and wanted to get an art degree. I'm sure there are good jobs out there for art degrees, but they have to be few and far between.

Unless you can get hired by a comic book company,I'd stay away form a degree in art. Unless you want to be an art teacher.

You sound like you're young so you have a couple of alternatives. First go for a marketable skill that you're good at but not so good that you get stuck in a money rut down the road. In other words, don't let making some money stop you from pursuing your dream goals.

Second, go for the career path of your choice while you're working that job to keep you going. Never stop dreaming big or going for what's really inside you. Write it down and stick it on your fridge, put it in your wallet, on the car visor, anywhere you can visibly see your true objective.

Right now that's what my daughter's doing; she started out pursuing a degree in Sports Management but found that career path for women had a really low glass ceiling. She didn't want to start over, so she switched to a minor in Business (which only had a slightly higher glass ceiling due to the economy). Once she graduated she bummed around in retail then found a job in logistics and trucking; she hated sales but discovered she was good in sales support. Now she's making a decent buck for a 23 year old, but she's not stopping there. She wants a graduate degree in healthcare management......says she wants to run a hospital or chain of clinics someday.

She took a strange path, but now she's happy and making a pretty decent buck with potential to do even more in the future. So find a skill you can market to keep you fed but dream big and don't stop until you reach whatever your ultimate goals are.

Now get to work!:flex:

Alot of guys make that mistake. Get out to use the GI Bill, major in a field with weak demand and then miss the "good old days" back in the military. Pretty sad. The GI Bill now is awesome! That pay allowance while not as much as you'd make while on active duty is pretty sweet. School art programs across the nation are being slashed....that'd be a terrible field to get into. My advice will differ but i'd take my cash and get a degree in one of the two year specialty programs like: radiation tech, physical therapy tech, ultrasound tech stuff like that. They're short, and you can get a job ANYWHERE. Once you've got the job in hand you can go back and major in whatever you want! PhD in basketweaving? Go ahead! You can still pay your bills and enjoy a decent lifestyle.

Education is an investment. You want/need to get a return on it. Think of it like stocks. Which stock has the highest yield, least volatility, least initial investment ect ect.

It took me 18 months to get the job I currently have. For a long while I was doing one time commissions and small time free lance work. Just be patient and something will come. Remember that attitude is everything, as long as you show you are a good candidate in your interview and can do the work, and get along with your coworkers, that would set you ahead of a lot of people already. Times are tough, but there is always work.
