So tonight, I played a small club in Raleigh and it went rather well. I played some original material and some covers. A complete acoustic set. After I got off stage, I was loading up my guitar when these 3 people walked up to me, 1 girl and 2 guys, easily between 19 and 22.

They wanted to compliment one of my covers in particular. Now I won't say the cover until after I say their exact words and once I tell you the song title, you'll all be wanting the biggest facepalm ever.

One of the guys patted me on the back and said "That was a sweet Green Day cover you did"

Now I hate Green Day, everything except for Dookie. So I had no damn clue what he was talking about.

I said thanks and mentioned I had no idea what Green Day song I covered.

WORKING CLASS HERO!!!

I literally almost hit him, but he was clueless so I said thanks and carried on. I'm sorry, John Lennon is turning in his grave right now at the thought that his song is now considered a Green Day song.

Rant over!

I didn't get into the Beatles hardcore until I was older. You totally should have said "Thanks, it's actually a John Lennon tune. You should check it out. " and I bet theres a good chance they'd go educate themselves lol

Normally I would, but I've been up since 430 this morning working from 615 to 230 and then cutting grass before heading out to the show. I was on fumes so my brain went numb for a minutes. But you're absolutely right! Now I sound like a dick! Haha

Lol nah, I'm the same way half the time. Especially when I'm hangry lol

I know what you mean. I was a little hangry at the time. So I just carried my happy ass to Taco Hell and order some tacos and thought about what he said. It's not the first time someone has done that with a song I covered and probably won't be the last.

Turn The Page was once called a Metallica cover, not Bob Segar.
I covered with my band Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath and people thought it was a Pantera cover. This one was by far one of the worst because if you're a true diehard metal fan, you know Sabbath before Pantera haha

This may be a little long, but I thought it pertinent.

This past weekend, I got asked to fill in for this cover band that was playing this small town music festival in Pennsylvania. It was all 60s rock stuff. 44 songs, all hits. Luckily I knew every one by heart! Easiest money I ever made in my life!

It was under a big tent with hundreds of people flanking the stage and a big dance floor in front of it. It was a big mix of ages dancing for the entire two hours.

What struck me was a girl who must have been no more than 9 years old. She was mouthing the lyrics to EVERY Beatles song. Now, when you're doing "I Saw Her Standing There" and "A Hard Day's Night".....ok, those are hits.

But she was singing along with "TELL ME WHY"! She was singing along with "BABY'S IN BLACK"! These are not hits!

To be honest.....that's not as unusual as you might think.

*******

My niece, 14 years old, just put together a little band.

"Uncle Leo! we played a gig! It was at a party, and there were no adults!"

"That's great! What did you play?"

"Um....we played 'Twist And Shout', we played 'Help', we played 'Satisfaction'...."

********

I see kids - high school kids, college kids, 20-something kids - always wearing Beatle shirts, music from the 60s, 70s, I saw a kid wearing a Bob Dylan shirt the other day........every one of my friends has kids now, and most of those kids are aware of (and enjoy) music of yesteryear.

I substitute taught drum lessons at this private school for a couple of years...I got into the classroom, there's a blackboard and on it are notes about Prog Rock. Like....it gets taught in school now. Afterschool? The kids would be jamming in the little practice rooms. Not in garages or basements, but at school.

One day I passed one room, these kids are playing "The Ballad of John And Yoko".

**********
I was born in 1969. In my lifetime, that music has never gone out of style, never vanished and then make a comeback, it was always on the radio, it was always in the air, new archival releases always being put out. That music is 50 years old, 40 years old. It would be WEIRD if every kid knew "Working Class Hero"! You know what I mean?

The great thing is that the person recognized it was a great song! It doesn't matter who wrote it, it's the content of the song......and they "got it"! It didn't sound old to them, it sounded totally fresh, pertinent and relevant. John Lennon would be SO PROUD and happy!

I guarantee you....the kids in the 60s did NOT know the music of 50 years prior like our generations do.

So you shouldn't lose faith! You should be encouraged that you picked the right horse! 😉

Hell, I'd be thankful kids are into good music! So what if they didn't know precisely where it's from?

Touche! I posted that and the next day realized I overreacted. It was just being tired and hangry. But yes, at least they knew the song. My oldest, 6 years old, can do something I couldn't do his age and that's sing Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden. Haha. Holding the notes and everything. Dude's gonna be a singer haha

Every single generation has contributed their share of good music. You learn more about artists and their influences as you get older and usually gain a greater appreciation for older tunes. I wouldn't sweat it too much. As one of these youths I actually count myself lucky to come of age on the heels of a GREAT generation of musicians (the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's) as well as some pretty innovative stuff made by musicians around my age. It's a great time to be a fan of music in my opinion.

Which club in Raleigh did you play?

I realized recently that my kids don't like the radio. They like to play stuff on my phone (they're still too young to have their own) because they can control what they hear. With the radio, they get what they get. I have a feeling all this technology might be shutting people out from new music instead of opening them up to it. I guess it all comes down to how you decide to use it.

Yeah at least with today's technology you can look for, find or even create different music, new and old, that's not getting airtime.

Why lose faith in anything? You could pass by and simply be a witness to life's general bullshitrees. The moment you lick it, and say, you felt the true spirit of the fretboard possessing your soul --- that very moment of bliss is all that matters. The rest is nothing. Or is it just me. :innocent:
