Last night was good, but I'm disappointed with the incorporation of the ufo into a critical part of the episode. I mean, it was fine in the first episode because it fit into the whole supposed siting of a ufo there during that time, but it was kind of lame in last episode. The episode was fantastic otherwise, but that part sort of ruined the end for me, especially where it beamed down directly over the Gearhart guy.
Really disappointed in the final episode. I feel like they did a poor job of attempting to tie together loose ends. The butcher and his wife end their life on the run in a lackluster fashion, the Milligan character finds himself stuck in a pencil pusher job for a mega company (I get it represents a changing to times moment, but still, it was lame how they tied up his character's final scene), the spaceship appearance in the previous episode has very little relevance in this episode, which makes it hard to understand why they had it appear at all in the series, and the mysterious drawings of Ted Danson's character turn out to have no significance whatsoever. Stuck through the entire series and feel let down with how it ended.
And also, like you mentioned Sodahead, regarding Reagan, it ended up having zero significance. It just feels like this series was this huge dramatic build up and it was ruined by a poor ending. Now all these little moments throughout the series where we thought something had significance wound up being nothing.
I just didn't care for the way they tied all the loose ends together (or attempted to). It just seemed like they didn't put a lot of effort into it. Peggy and Ed, two of the most crucial characters, see their run end with him dying and her being caught in a freezer. It didn't make a lot of sense to me how the Milligan character goes from a sociopathic hitman to being welcomed into a desk job, which he clearly didn't appear to have the skillset for excelling at (not to mention he was wanted for several murders).
Oh, and I was really annoyed that they basically did nothing about the Gherhart kid that was locked up for the attempted shooting. I thought for sure he would have a final showing in the last episode in some way. I was actually a little annoyed they turned him into a bad guy in the first place. I just didn't care for the ending, and for me, it kind of ruined the entire series for me because all of that dramatic build up of the characters led to a dull outcome. I can't see myself following the next season (assuming there is one).
Have faith my friend. Everything will make sense in the end. It's an anthology after all and the writers and director's don't strike me as sloppy. I think it is all part of a master plan. That's my opinion anyway
Watched S1 back when it first aired and now S2. In retrospect, while I think S2 was good I agree that the ending was very underwhelming. There was little payoff for all of the buildup. I was watching the whole bit with Lou driving Peggy and kept thinking she was gonna get sniped by Hanzee at any moment, but nothing happened. In fact any conflict was resolved in the first what, 20 minutes? I get having a slower ending to wrap things up, especially in a show like this with a larger cast, but even that felt rushed. What happened to Bear's boy? We know Peggy went to jail but would have been nice to see something more. Why did Hanzee just give up on her after going to the effort of chasing them down? Did he just assume they were both dead?
Overall, while I did like the season for most of the part, I wasn't as invested in the characters as I was in S1. Hanzee was a less intense Malvo, Peggy was a less interesting Lester and Lou, while certainly more badass, was a less developed Gus. And again, the first episode and the finale didn't leave me as satisfied. And while I don't mind the whole aliens thing as a whole, since you did see a UFO in the first episode, it's appearance in the penultimate episode was simply a deus ex machina to save Lou, Peggy and Ed.
I'd recommend season 1 though. As said, I feel like it has a much stronger main cast, although that's probably cause it focuses much more on four central characters, as well as having a much stronger finale. Martin Freeman and BBT are fantastic in it.
