There were two shows, "The Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog", and the satAM (saturday morning AM) version "Sonic The Hedgehog". Adventures was more light-hearted and slap-stick, whereas the STH was more in keeping with the series as a whole and was a direct adapation of the comic series/vice versa.
Having been a huge Sonic fan myself at the time, and that you are/were a fan as well, its probably better that you know the satAM version IS the original version as it is in the canon of the series, the video games, and the comic books.
The other one where it's just him and Miles a majority of the time came after the comic books and after satAM.
Actually, even "Adventures" is a spin-off of the comic, as the "badniks" we see here are also in the comic series, and this is linked to the aforementioned satAM. Also, in the game Sonic Spinball, we see these same badniks and other freedom fighters from satAM, further proving that everything is linked to the saturday morning show.
The satAM would prove to mold and shape what the Sonic series is today, as it allowed the series to go beyond that of Sonic himself and this proved to be another huge stepping stone with the whole furry thing.
The original would have lasted alot longer than two seasons but it just wasn't in the plans of the ABC executives who make these decisions.
