I tried going to bed, but it is one of those nights when my mind won't shut down. So, I thought I'd bore and annoy you all with this. 😀

The B&B Cafe, north of town was a favorite. You could order off a menu, but their specialty was fried chicken, served family style. A huge platter of chicken was brought to the table, with large bowls of mashed potatoes and gravy, two vegetables and salad, along with piping hot rolls and cornbread. You could ask for a table, or my favorite, a booth. On the wall next to each booth was a tableside jukebox, a Seeburg Wall-o-Matic. You could select music by Hank Williams, Bobby Vinton, Frank Sinatra etc. Last time I was in town the building was still there, but has stood empty for many years.

Another favorite was the A&W Drive-In. On Friday and Saturday nights, it was a scene right out of American Graffiti. The rest of the week a calmer atmosphere prevailed, with the music played over the PA speakers more subdued. Your burger and fries were served in aluminum foil packets, the soft drinks in a cold frosted mug. Ours looked much like the one pictured here, minus the tables, and the sign was different.

One of them was called Gino's. It gave you freedom of choice. They had burgers,KFC chicken. In the 80's they even had roast beef sandwiches.

We didn't have a White Castle, but there was a small place in Mission Ks. that sold sacks of tiny burgers. Our Dairy Queen then was in a small building, no inside seating, and all they sold was ice cream. There is still one like that in Leavenworth, closed during winter.

Show Biz Pizza in Colorado Springs which later turned into a Chucky Cheese

Also, DZ: Discovery Zone

Or any other place to play games and have food.

My favourite place to go as a child was a tiny little soup & sandwich place that was run by an elderly woman named Renee. It was my favourite because my grandfather used to pick me up from kindergarten and take me there, which was special because it was a just-me-and-my-Papa thing. I had a lot of siblings, so any special time with my grandfather meant the most to me.

Every time I went I would get to eat a big tuna sandwich, and if I ate everything (including the crusts) my grandfather would get a cinnamon bun the size of a dinner plate and split it with me.

Pizza City and The Big BowWow right on Crossbay Blvd. in Howard Beach.

Pizza City had these huge 3'x3' pizza trays that you could smell from blocks away.
The Big BowWow was a cool restaurant with everything from Hot Dogs to Roast Beef sandwiches to Pizza. They also had a gameroom with pinball machines and other pre-computer games types of arcade games. It was also a place where local bikers and car clubs would meet and then go racing down Crossbay Blvd.

Maestro's Pizza in the Bronx, used to order the slices by the window
Kosher deli up on Jerome ave in the Bronx, for the life me can not remember the name....but the used to have mini kosher hard salami's hanging down and the kosher sour pickles...yum
Carvel Ice cream, used to ride down to it on my banana seat bike as a child
Bagel Factory, every Sunday morning would ride down with my bike and we would have bagel, lox and cream cheese ...the bagels were still warm and delicious

The local drive-ins that were local landmarks. One that we visited is now a bank.

I have to mention Joe's Barn, a legendary place that was in Martin City Missouri. It really was in an old barn, buffet style, for one low price. Good old fashioned food, and the hugh gooey cinnamon rolls were out of this world. Sadly, it went out of business in the late 70s and the building is long gone.

Grandma's house, duh!(no limits on sweets and green veggies strictly optional) I liked Dairy Queen and we lived so far out in the sticks that going to McDonald's was an event. There were some good local meat and three and short order places nearby, too. One of these had the first and best soft serve vanilla ice cream I ever tasted.

We used to have a "Big Boy" restaurant in Calgary that I remember going to. It might just be nostalgia, but they were the best hamburgers of my childhood.

As a kid it was either the Dairy Queen or an old franchise drive in like you saw in the movie American Graffiti called The Dog And Suds. Dog And Suds root beer was the best ever made!!

Anyone else remember Rax? They used to have kids meals that came in buckets that were different shapes (Like Mcdonald's used to do for Halloween). I remember they gave you a roast beef, a big chocolate chip cookie, fries, and a toy. They still exist, but not around here. Most of them became Arby's (sucks).
