Three of mine were music teachers. I had been messing around with my oldest brothers tenor saxophone which was sitting unused in its case, but some of the keys stuck and it needed some work. During my 4th grade year we went on a field trip to see the Kansas City Philharmonic and I was captivated by the string section, the cellos in particular. I started taking music at school, and Mr. Bailey was my first teacher. Even then he seemed old too me, but must have been in his late 30's or early 40's at most.
He was later joined by Mr. Wilson and Mr. Sam (his last name was Samuelson). This trio could, it seemed, play almost any musical instrument and they often performed at the Starlight Theater. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Sam drifted in and out of my life over the years, (the school district was growing rapidly by the 1970s) but Mr. Bailey was with me from 4th grade throughout the high school years. They were all so kind and supportive over the years and helped instill in me a deep love of, and appreciation for, music that will never leave me. They are all gone now for many years, but I will never forget them.
