Three of mine were music teachers. I had been messing around with my oldest brothers tenor saxophone which was sitting unused in its case, but some of the keys stuck and it needed some work. During my 4th grade year we went on a field trip to see the Kansas City Philharmonic and I was captivated by the string section, the cellos in particular. I started taking music at school, and Mr. Bailey was my first teacher. Even then he seemed old too me, but must have been in his late 30's or early 40's at most.

He was later joined by Mr. Wilson and Mr. Sam (his last name was Samuelson). This trio could, it seemed, play almost any musical instrument and they often performed at the Starlight Theater. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Sam drifted in and out of my life over the years, (the school district was growing rapidly by the 1970s) but Mr. Bailey was with me from 4th grade throughout the high school years. They were all so kind and supportive over the years and helped instill in me a deep love of, and appreciation for, music that will never leave me. They are all gone now for many years, but I will never forget them.

Music teachers seem to care more about their students as opposed to science or math teachers. I guess it's because I had a really caring music teacher that I still take my sax out every once in a while and jam. I love playing tenor sax, what kind of tenor did your older brother have? I'm really wanting to buy a Mark VI but they're really super expensive.

Oh man Danny, that was a long time ago. I'd have to call my brother and ask him; I don't remember what kind it was.

My favorite was a psychology professor in college. Dr. Hess....his teaching brought out a passion for the science that I have to this day. Tragically he passed away a year after my graduation. I will never forget the wisdom and over all life lessons he taught everyone.

The one I married. 😉

No doubt. 🙂

It sounds like Dr. Hess was quite a man. Great teachers can be so inspirational in our lives. May he R.I.P.

My 6th grade teacher who got me to start watching football and become a Dallas fan.

My favorite teacher I have ever had was my 9th grade sociology teacher. Now normally, this would be due to bias on the fact that I was a teenage boy and she was extremely attractive. But aside from the superficial, I really enjoyed how she didn't just teach, but related personal stories and opinions on the things we were learning about. It made the class much more enjoyable and engage-able since we could join in and openly share our thoughts on the subject as well.

I think the fact that she brought her own opinions on the subjects inspired the rest of us in the class to do the same, and it got really good discussions going.

Having a teacher who makes the classroom an interesting place to be is a blessing. I had some teachers who really just wanted to lecture and give out reading assignments. No discussion or debate of ideas.

Sadly, majority of my high school classes were like that, which is why that one teacher was so special.

Looking back, all of my favorite teachers were math teachers.😀

Three off the top of my head. One in high school, and two in college.

Mrs Sands, my soph and jr yr English teacher, who was also my dentist's wife. Wonderful teacher who won Teacher of the Year award, and wrote me a great letter of recommendation for college. Kind, patient, really knew how to deal with kids.

In college, two professors.. both now deceased.

Dr Shneidman, whom the manager Lee Sniderman in my baseball stories was based on. Had him for four classes in Soph and Jr years of college. Mostly a mideval history teacher, but also taught Soph Seminar. He was a very intelligent, cultured, traveled, and funny guy. He used to laugh at me for taking him for so many classes, as his classes required a 10 page term paper each term. Never got anything less than a A minus from him.

Dr Fischman- Had him for Latin American history my last three semesters. His classes were extremely easy. He gave short handouts, we watched movies in his classes, and discussed things that often didnt even have to do with history. Also got A minuses from him every term. Used to let us call him by his first name, Jerry, instead of Dr Fischman.

One of the funniest Fischman stories. On a couple of occasions, for whatever reason, many people in the class didnt read the short handout he gave for one of the classes. He got pissed off, threw the class out of the room, and gave us the finger. Such was a ritual that I later found out from my academic advisor, that Dr Fischman sometimes did.

Another funny Fischman story. I used to sing at Coffee House with my friend Barney. One time, without my knowledge, Jerry showed up at the Coffee House with his video camera, and showed the singing to the class the next day in class. I was embarrassed, even though everyone told me I sang very well. (I've always had a good voice)

I had a few other teachers and professors multiple times in HS and college who were very good, but these three were really my favorites.

J.M., my American history teacher in my first year of college. She made American history come alive. For her it was a lot more than a litany of dates and events. She went into fine detail about America's progressive movements like the labor movement and suffragists. Her lectures were more like top-shelf documentaries than school. She used the A-V gear of the day to maximum advantage. And she totally shunned the Cold-War era plastic patriotism we'd been spoon-fed from grade school on.

I'd have to say my English teacher from Year 8, Mr Simpson, was a legend. He played guitar and was a fan of Slayer, which meant that I got on very well with him 😀
