Feed a Starving Artist

Hi all, It’s your friendly neighborhood dark closet here, stopping by to do a soap-box thing for a moment, so I beg your indulgence. Let me start by saying that this post is in NO WAY directed at ANY particular persons or groups, but the Tickling Community as a whole. This is not to flame anyone, but simply to share some information with anyone who may not know. This is meant with the deepest respect of the entire community.

Anyway.

There have been a few strings of post recently touching upon this topic, and with the recent release of Yenny’s E-Comic and the Fiendish Intent E-Zine from MTJ Publications, I thought it an appropriate time.

The topic is cost of new Material.

We, the Artists, Writers and Publishers of Tickling Entertainment love nothing more than sharing our arts with you. This is a tight-knit community and in many ways we are all here for each other. Back before the days of the Internet, us older guys remember looking EVERYWHERE for any tickling stuff. You’d spend, like 8 bucks for a copy of Penthouse to read one small tickling article, and if it had a picture you were lucky. Yeah, we all had our stashes of Tickling Mags and those old vids, but we were always afraid of someone finding them, right?

Now with the Internet, you can get pretty much get anything you want, anytime you want. And this is because of all of us sharing what we’ve got.

Dig Dug Dog asked me once in a reply… “Where do you find the time?” The truth is, I don’t.

I, like all of you, have a regular job and other things to contend with. I speak now not only for myself, but for all the artists and writers. When you read a story you like, think of the guy who stayed up until 1 am pounding it out to share it. Or when you see a cool comic, remember that there was probably someone putting the finishing touches on it in between school, the job at the Kwiki-Mart and trying to get laid once in awhile.

None of us are making anything off of this. Yes, sometimes it seems hard to part with cash for the stuff we love, but in order to keep it flowing we need to occasionally support our fellow artists.

12 bucks is a lot for an E-Zine, a lot would think. Well, yeah, in a way. But understand that Fiendish Intent is not just a collection of Tickling stories. Writers were literally challenged to come up with the Best Story they’ve written so far. Long, detailed stories. I’d say from my experience, multiplied by four other writers and the time MTJ put into it…about 100 or so hours were devoted to putting this together. We’ve sold Seven. Now none of us expected to make thousands on this thing, it was fun….but seven?

Now, this DOES NOT mean that we don’t like doing free stuff. Hey, I love it. I like to share with other like-minded people. But some ARE trying to maybe make a small profit or company out of their fetish. Think of it this way…..

We all talk about how we’d like to see Tickling become more mainstream, and in order for that to happen we need companies like MTJ, Magic Touch, Realtickling, Yaqi and countless others I’m leaving out. (Sorry, just making a point.) These are companies that are getting high-quality stuff out there. Yaqi himself has gotten exposure on MTV, which is sure to raise awareness a notch. It can only keep going.

But these things DO take money. Plus, to be completely honest, we all like to make a few bucks here and there for our efforts, whatever they may be. Even the forum you are reading this on, impossible 10 years ago, needs funds to keep going.

You may ask if I’m just blatantly advertising stuff. Well, yes. That’s what you do when you’re trying to get things started. You advertise. You start with people you know. That’s you guys.

All we’re asking is that you understand why things aren’t always free.

Case in point. I have done a few Custom Fiction pieces for people. I LOVE doing them. But I once got asked to do one that was so intricate in detail, that I literally had to follow links around the Internet to get the stuff right. Research. I had to take notes on paper to keep everything, even about a dozen names, straight. Development. This takes a lot more time than just thinking things up, which on its own isn’t easy sometimes. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind getting a few bucks for all that work. Sorry.

In closing, let me also say that I’ve not forgotten what you DO give back to us. Response. Enjoyment. Satisfaction. Friendship. Appreciation. Even a fan base for some of the more popular ones.

Thank You. I mean that.

You are the reason we do this. All we ask is that you sometimes help Feed a Starving Artist.

Well said, Dave. Some of the younger members can't recall the pre-net days, and therefore it can't always be expected that they will appreciate the way our community has grown...By that statement I mean NO DISRESPECT to anyone! Our younger members are the future of this community, But they should realize one simple thing: The bulk of the free material they see in this Forum and elsewhere, when NOT provided by producers like Morandilas, MTP Jeff, etc, was produced in the old days, in the old ways, circulating via snail mail, before anyone was willing to pay for it.

How thankful I am that younger producers like Ozzy, Scamwich, etc. are here to take the helm now and inspire an even younger generation of TKers. I am also thankful that this younger crowd CAN make cigarette money doing what they love.

There is a price for everything, my brethren...The price we pay today for our fixation with tickling is far less than the frustration we used to endure when there was painfully little Tk material to be had.

Just my rant.

Word up, bro.

Well, I can't add much to what Dave has said here. Only the facts from my side of the tracks. I write for TFTA. I like doing that. I get some money for it. I'm not getting rich, though. Neither is Morandilas. Given the fact that I wrote for free before, posting stories on this forum, I have to say that I found it exhilerating to be able to do what I love and get money for it. Would I do it for free again? I don't know. Yes, the odd story here and there. But certainly not on any semblance of a regular basis. Same goes for artists. They are more inclined to sacrifice hours and hours to their work if they're getting something back.

To make something clear - The support that artists need isn't just money. Praise can go a long way. Dave got me started on writing again, removing my block with something as simple as getting in touch with me, telling me he likes my work. soletk told me he found my stories incredibly sadistic, cheering me up even more. And then, out of the blue, I get praise from Ozzy, of all people. That was something, as I pretty much idolize the man.

There is a simple reason for me to get so worked up about this entire issue. Well, two reasons, really. First, I don't want to see those artists whose work I enjoy so much go away in frustration. That has happened before, and it always leaves a gap that can't really be filled. I don't want to go back to those days when you'd be without new material for months.
And the second reason? Artists have to eat. Praise is a sweet morsel, money doubly so. And I'm so hungry.

Thanks for understanding. 😎

Marauder is absolutely right - hearing people appreciate what you do is very meaningful. Not to sound vain, but I'm sure writers write and artists draw and video producers film at least partly because they are hoping for some accolades. It can sometimes be frustrating to write a story and have the impression that I'm talking to myself. Or worse, to have it dissed by the hypercritics and contributors of nothing that litter that OTHER tickling forum.

I know I personally agonize over ideas for Nylon Dungeon stories at times, and have tossed more than a few in the can, because I don't want to dump a lousy story on people. And, as Dave so clearly points out, having a job that takes up about 150% of my time and a wife and home and all that cuts deeply into Tickle Story Writing Hour, so it requires a conscious effort sometimes to make time for stories.

I realize the Nylon Dungeon series isn't everyone's bag; some people HATE nylon stockings, after all (which, by the way, is also a hint about an upcoming story). It's meant to appeal to a specialized audience, functioning as a bit of extra flavoring, if you will, to people who happen to think nylon stockings are really sexy. This is why I try to get at least one story into each issue, although due to time constraints I wasn't able to get one into October's TFTA. More than one or two stories per issue would be overkill, but one or two is just right.

So, in summing up, to quote Frank Zappa:

If you're in the audience and like what we do
We want you to know that we like you all too

What I want to know is who left the door unlocked at the sweat shop again?

Get back to work you ungrateful lot! Just last week we began feeding you twice each day!

Seriously...

Thanks for your support!

The Yenny e-comic is doing very well. Sales are steady and Ozzy is doing his usual bang up job including little surprise extra's that even I was not aware of.

The October issue of TFTA is going to be one of the very best issues produced to date. Fans will be treated to..

** a new cover by BAC

** Art Gallery spotlight on "Strait Jackets & Tickling" which will include art by "Mandell, Ozzy, ShanE, Tkl, and Tklman.

**Scamwich's "Sola Mia" returns this issue!

**The next fiendish chapter in Smith's comic serial "La Diabla

** Max Speer's Upperbody tickling column

**Art from Soletk & Restif

** Great tickle torture fiction from Dave2112, Shem the Penman, Xodlirv, and perhaps one or two more if I can find the room!

This issue will be jammed packed with great tickling action. I should have a preview up on the site come this Monday.

Sales for "Fiendish Intent" have been slow but I am confident they will pick up as more tickle torture fiction lovers become aware of it's existence, easy access, and quality . TFTA also got off to a bumpy start but here we are over two years and 21 issues later... "Fiendish Intent" will do the same I have no doubt. The first issue is amazing with over 50 pages of great tickle torture fiction thanks to the talented authors that marked it's debut.

Speaking of talented writers...

I just received the first story submission for the November issue of "Fiendish Intent". It is from veteran internet & TFTA author Shem the Penman and it absolutely blew me away. Fans of 30's and 40's pulp fiction will eat this up and of course connoisseurs of tickle torture fiction will be delighted.

Thanks again!
