I'm interested in buying a ferret as a pet some where down the line. But I've known for some time that ferrets are illegal to have in California. Does anybody know why this is?

I saw a ferret book at Petco, when I went to get some fish medicine the other day. If I didn't know better, I'd say its pointless to even sell the books here if you cannot even have a ferret in this state.

Maybe the laws have changed since I learned about it and they are allowed, or there some stipulation I'm unaware of.

Hi, Vlad,

The best info I can find is here: http://www.ferretsanonymous.com/legalize.html

I had a lot of friends in Nortnern California who owned ferrets, but I think it was still legal back then. There is a misconception that ferrets are dangerous, which is why California outlawed them. Legislation is pending to change that, according to the above link.

Best regards,

@ Val- Yeah, thanks for the link. Unfortunately I'm already aware of the petition to legalize.

Its really silly. A ferret isn't any more dangerous here than it would be anywhere else.

@ TK- Because they're cute and energetic. I've always sort of wanted one. I am aware they can be destructive (tearing/biting furnature, etc), but thats why you train them.

Ferrets are very tempramental, much like dalmations are. But theres ways to sooth the animal.

When I get a snake, I think I'll buy a ferret too. I know snakes eat rodents, so I wonder if they'll eat ferrets. 😛

I was going to get a snake too when I was younger, but they weren't that interesting, the selection. I would have rather had a hedgehog or a mouse.

Theres something fancy and majestic about ferrets, particularly white ones. And its funny that the little critters are so active, and they're bodies are long and stretchy, its neat.

I'd want to buy one of those polls for my ferret so he or she can climb up it and play on it.

Yes ferrets are cute and interesting and snakes are cool too. My preferred pet has always been the canine but, I'd really like to have a komodo dragon or aligator. I thought maybe you wanted a ferret as a foot licker. I read about a lady bringing ferrets to one of KJ's renfairs and he said it was very interesting.

LOL, nah, but interesting you bring tickling and licking into this. That was the last thing on my mind actually. LOL

I'd want to take my little ferret for a walk, just like a dog.

Have you seen that funny commericial where the guy is mocking the ferret and the ferret is just staring at him and then it smiles, and then as quick as a whip the ferret jumps at him and bites his lips and doesn't let go? LOL

That was funny and cute.

I'm not sure why ferrets are illegal in California. It most likely stems from it carrying a disease at some point in time or somehting. Every state has it's own particular regulations as far as owning pets. You may want to find out if you can get some sort of exotics license to own one legally.
But...Ferrets stink. I mean they smell like the end of the WORLD. Even if their habitat is spotless they create such a god awful stink that you wouldn't want to be in the same room that they do their little ferret business in.
If you want something cute, energetic, and playful you should consider some sort of large rodent. Rabbits, guinnea pigs...they are good pets also and far less stinky.

You don't let them go in the house then Ness. You potty-train them and keep them clean and sanitary.

You'll know you're being irresponsible when you see a long slinky thing covered in it's own $hit and its all over the place. LOL! 😛

Oh you mean to keep them outdoors, Vlad? lol If I were still in CA I would have thought of that. But since I'm in the land of the 6 month long winter I didn't even consider keeping pets outdoors. I think that, crap aside, ferrets just have a natural...oder. I've seen them a lot in pet stores and even when they are clean and well groomed they still smell!

I actually didn't mean that necessarily, I was refering to when they go to the bathroom. But now that you mention keeping them outside, or preferable in the garage where it's warmer, that would be a good alternative.

But I wouldn't take it if the smell issue that you bring up could be worked around, assuming it would be a problem for me. Is it a smell all ferrets have or just the ones you could smell? Maybe it wasn't a natural odor at all, but something else. Fear has a smell. You can smell fear on dogs actually, believe it or not. Fear has a scent, or a scent that is caused by it, sort of like how people tend to have more bad breath when they are nervous or their stomach is out of whack or needs to be flushed out.

Maybe ferrets are just are just easily frightened or startled. Although I doubt that, and it probably is an odor. Maybe that book at Petco would explain it. If it doesn't I don't know what to make of it if I can smell it and theres no explaination for it.

Aye, Laddy! Good to see ye still posting! Tell, me, Laddy. Have ye ever hear the word "lickle" before. I hear them we ferrets are rather good at lickling! TK told me that he did! Read it back when he was on aol. Some fancy pants tickler wrote about it online he did. Suposed to be a real tickle king according to a couple o' girlies he knows. Calls himself a sultan. Thinks he's hot stuff he does. Above all other tickle fans. Sees it in a different way. TK spoke to one if the guy's tickle slaves a while back. They all place themselves far above the rest of the tickling community they do. Says that everyone else just see's tickling as a way into sex. But, this sultan tickle king and his followers claim to be tickle torture purists they do. They could all care less about sexual fullfillment! Is that not just a hoot, Laddy? Sad it is. So what will ya do about the ferret stink, Laddy? Will ye clean up when they dookie on ye floor? They do lots of it, Laddy. I've seen it through D's eyes I have! It's quite disgusting and smelly too! A neighbor had a couple of the we little creatures she did. I never saw such a dung heap as that! D offered to empty it. When we all saw it we all wished he'd kept his mouth shut we did! You may want to think twice before ya go purchasing one them we little dookie critters, Laddy!
