Swatting a fly is akin to killing an eagle and this practice MUST STOP!
Flies are beneficial to man and therefore their numbers must not dwindle... Not even by one!
Flies and their offspring have many uses to man and our very existence relies on the importance of flies and the roles they play in decomposition and ridding our roadways of deceased animals which the road crews fail to clear.
The maggots are known to break down organic material so it can further decompose. And the flies inoculate the animal with beneficial bacteria from other sources.
Flies and their offspring also play an important role in medicine. Each year hundreds of human owe their lives and even their bodies to the work done by these insects.
Maggots are now once again gaining respect in the medical field. Their use even has a name, maggot debridement therapy or MDT. Maggots are efficient healers of wounds. This was recognized centuries ago when wounded soldiers whose wounds were infested with maggots healed better than those that were not infested. The reason for this is that the maggots used for this purpose eat dead tissues and leave the healthy, living tissues alone. They also excrete substances which inhibit and may even kill bacteria. This is especially useful in areas with poor blood supply that do not benefit much from antibiotics that cannot reach the area in adequate concentration to do their job.
Flies and their offspring even serve a role in law enforcement and aid the police and FBI in helping to solve murder cases and thus getting criminals off of our streets.
Forensic entomologists can provide scientific evidence about the manner of death and when death occurred. They can identify the time at which flies found the body and use this information to estimate a date of death weeks or even months post-death. This contrasts with pathology techniques where the accuracy of estimating the date of death is severely reduced if a body is discovered more than 3 days after death.
So you see... swatting and killing creatures such as these who are clearly beneficial and detrimental to our existance would be as bad or indeed even worse than killing a bald eagle.
Please support our fight to save the fly and at the same time... save ourselves.
