Aaah, shit. I only discovered Richie Havens last year and found three of his Lps so far : Alarm Clock, The great blind dregree, and Portfolio (with the drawings included in an envelope !) and I would have a hard time deciding which one is the greatest. Great guitarist with a unique style; warm and beautiful voice; wonderful, soulful and generous music. I came to know of him with a recent DVD compilation of the "Barry Richards Show", culled from fine, fine performances of many other bands of 1970_1971; we can see him performing "Handsome Johnny", and I was like "Wow ! Who is this guy??" I had never heard of him till then. His music is a good picture of what soooo much music of today blatantly lacks !! I already began introducing some of my friends to his music, and they instantly loved it as well. What a discovery !

How right you are about Richie Havens in comparison to todays music, which I've often said seems to lack any soul, any depth. There must be some good music out there, but I have yet to come across any.

Hi Buggie !

On monday evening my fellow musician friends made me discover the "Live at Vienna Opera" DVD by Joe Bonamassa : WOW. Just WOW. Please, check it out ! He's been the focus lately of a lot of attention from the rock press these days - and now I know why !

Also, buy the "Barry Richards Show" DVD/CD package : I'm sure you'll thank me later for this advice. Lots of classic bands you're familiar with, you'll love it at least as much as I do ! Easy to find on E-Bay.

Always good to see my friend from France posting. 🙂 I'll look into your suggestions, sounds intresting.

Paris, I found some clips of Bonamassa on Youtube, wow indeed! His style on Blues Deluxe brought to mind the late great Albert Collins, who I saw live three times. Now this is music! Turns out he's coming to Austin in November. Sure hope I can catch that show. I'll be looking into the Richards Show next.

I saw Richie in concert a few years ago. He was showing his age but he could still play!

If memory serves there was a band called "It's A Beautiful Day" who were supposed to open woodstock (best known for the song "White Bird" I beleive....), and they got stuck in the massive traffic jam of people trying to get into the festival that day. They could not make it to the stage in time and the festival organizers asked Richie if he was ready to go do his thing and he nailed it, and became a household name. He was an amazingly talented musician and will be truly missed......

You are correct about the band and song. As I recall, White Bird was their only song that got much air play. Intresting, about Woodstock. I didn't know they were scheduled to open instead of Havens.

So the other day, NPR played a repeat of a show with Richie Havens live in the studio. This was fantastic! Richie was awesome playing some more obscure tunes I wasn't familiar with. And was such a gentleman during the interview and call-in segments, I enjoyed him talking about music as much as playing music.

Thank you, sir.

Drew

Dang Drew, that sounds great. Wish I'd known it was going to air.
