For Dog Lovers

I've never started a thread before, so I thought it only fitting that my first one I would dedicate to my little dog Buddy, whom we put to sleep today after 16 wonderful years of unselfish, unconditional love. I dug this poem out of my files. It's not as emotionally charged as some of the ones I get, but it still makes a nice statement for man/woman's best friend. As his doctor and his owner, I always thought he would shy away from me, especially as he got older and required more care. But he never held a grudge, even at the end as I held him one last time while we placed a catheter in his tiny leg. A truer friend could never be found. I miss him already.

A DOGS SOUL

Every dog must have a soul
Somewhere deep inside
Where all his hurts and grievances
Are buried with his pride.

Where he decides the good and bad,
The wrong way from the right,
And where his judgment carefully
Is hidden from our sight.

A dog must have a secret place
Where every thought abides,
A sort of close acquaintance that
He trusts in and confides.

And when accused unjustly for
Himself, he cannot speak,
Rebuked, he finds within his soul
The comfort he must seek.

He'll love, though he is unloved,
And he'll serve though badly used,
And one kind word will wipe away
The times when he's abused.

Although his heart may break in two
His love will still be whole,
Because God gave to every dog
An understanding soul!

*wiping away tears* Oh gosh dear, I am so sorry. Many of us have been there, but no matter how much you prepare for this kind of moment, and no matter how neccessary it may be, it just does not ease the pain of making that decision at all. I am here for you if you need someone to talk to at all during your grieving process, or if you just need someone to cry with (I'm crying already). I sincerely hope your tears may quickly be replaced with happy and warm hearted memories of your many years together. Bless you and that little angel that devoted his life to providing you and your family an eternity of love and loyalty.

I'm so sorry you had to put Buddy to sleep. I know that YOU know it was the best thing to do. And you as Buddy's owner and Doctor knew that better than most of us.

Just know that he's up there with my little girl, Scooter. They're both across the Rainbow Bridge just waiting for us to join them on some glorious day yet to come. I know Scooter will enjoy playing with him and showing him around especially to her favorite swimming hole.

You were there for me... And now I'm here for you.

I agree, Q, that goodbyes are never easy. But they are inevitable. So cherish the time you have and give them lots of love while you still can. Peace....Des

Des... don't fret at all. You didn't open an old wound. I have wonderful memories of Scooter and Talle' is doing lots of thing that Scooter used to do (which is a bit interesting! LOL) including only sleeping on her blanket, and she's found several of Scooter's racquet balls that were apparently buried in our yard! LOL

I just hope you're doing ok.
