I just wondered what servers people were using and how you find their service to be. I'm going to be adding a directory of web hosts to my site down the road and was looking for some feedback. I've personally tried the following...
AOL - I used it in the beginning since I was on AOL. They were okay at the time. But, they're very limitted in what you can put up.
Geocities - The site was up and down three different times there. They seemed to consider ALL tickling to be sexual and kept killing the site...even though there was no actual sexual content at the time.
Yahoo Groups - (I'm including this since many choose this route rather than building a regular site.) While the options DO allow for a fair amount of stuff, there are some limitations. The first is that the security of yahoo is so lacking. Groups are constantly hacked and their files infected by virii. Also, unless you screen all posts, they generally end up taken over by SPAM. But, they ARE a good place to share larger files and have discussions if you get a good group of members.
Takehost - These guys were pretty good in the beginning. They're specificly for adult sites. So, we could put up what we wanted. But, there were increasing drawbacks. We couldn't hotlink images. They put their banners on every page. They redirected a large percentage of our hits to DocPorn. The customer service went down the toilet, going from being prompt and helpful to nothing. Images were no longer showing up. They're no longer worth even considering in my book.
boomspeed - While you can't hotlink from the free space, it's only $6/mo to be able to do whatever you want. The only complaint I have about them is that they are often slow or down completely. This is likely because of the more rapid than expected growth. They do seem to be working on things. So, they may improve as they do so. Not a bad place to start.
answerz - They allow adult material. But, they lie to their clients. They claim to only use small text banners. That's all the client sees. But, everyone else gets large hardcore banners on every page. So, that rules them out in my book.
cybehost - By far the best free server I've seen so far. They allow whatever adult material you want (within the law, of course). They allow sponsor ads. They allow hotlinking (I think). They're also looking at allowing clips down the road.
There were a couple of others that I can't recall at the moment. So, what about everyone else? What servers have you tried? And, what did you think of them?
