This was sent by one of my approximately 100 relatives up there:

You know you're from Upstate NY when:

1. Your idea of a traffic jam is ten cars waiting to pass a tractor on the highway.
2. "Vacation" means going to Rochester for the weekend.
3. You measure distance in hours.
4. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.
5. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.
6. You use a down comforter in the summer.
7. Your grandparents drive at 65 mph through 13 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.
8. You see people wearing hunting clothes at social events.
9. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
10. You think of the major food groups as deer meat, beer, fish, and berries.

11. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.
12. There are 7 empty cars running in the parking lot at the Stewart's at any given time.
13. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
14. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.
15. You think sexy lingerie is tube socks and flannel pajamas.(YOU MEAN IT'S NOT?????)
16. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, construction.
17. It takes you 3 hours to go to the store for one item even when you're in a rush because you have to stop and talk to everyone in town.
18. You actually understand these jokes and forward them to all our friends from Upstate NY.
🙄 Q

Scary!

I've found that nearly the entire "belt" around the Great Lakes is VERY similar in attitudes and weather patterns. Canada in the southern third is most likely of a similar mind, I suppose. Any of our Canadian posters care to jump in, eh? Free Molsons for all would have been enough to get ya elected mayor of Derby (really small town north of Buffalo). Wish I had internet access when I lived up your way, eq....sigh. Q

OK Q.........

These are pretty funny......(hiding the flannels and tube socks...) even though those tube socks keep your feet nice and warm while they bathe in Shea butter all night.... : )and the flannels come in many styles and colors now Q! LOLOL .....

Upstate...

Okay...for the first time in about 20 years, I'm officially missing being upstate...and it's November too! Sigh... Q

I miss the lakes, but I sure don't miss the winters. About February, seems that it will never end. Then during the thaw, it rains non-stop for two months.

BTW, Q - I know where Derby is. I'm one of those Polacks from Tonawanda.

Yikes

This will be my first winter up here. Are you people trying to scare me back to NJ?

Jen

Q, thanks for posting that. I got that as an E-mail about six months ago and had forgotten all about it. It's all true....all true...

And Jen, if you think it's bad now...you should have been here during the '98 Ice Storm, and Albany didn't even get it that bad.

We were without power for two to three weeks, and my car was entombed in 9 inches of solid ice. Literally.:sowrong:

Do any of you native Upstaters have a good remedy for sinus problems?

Seems this NJ nose has yet to acclimate to the changes here. Please help. My head is going to explode.

Thanks,
Jen

Jeez, I'm havin' flashbacks of visitin' family back in Wisconsin. Last time we drove back, in '89, there was a blizzard where we largely skidded through Iowa and Minnesota (and yeah, I do still hear that states name as Min-eh-soo-tah). I'm certain that we travelled off the freeway and didn't notice, at least twice.

Still laugh hysterically watchin' Fargo. The language reminds me of most of my relatives. You betcha. Ohhhh yahhhhh.

As for the damned weather, well, it's in the 60s at worst during the day, here in sunny California, and the mountains where I live are just gettin' down to 40 now, at night. Brr. 😉

Hmmph

Yeah, but the ground stays put here...ya betcha! 😉 Q

Now I am really giggling after rereading and thinking... I can probably manage one without ::giggling:: too, But what fun would that be ?

Guess I am always Giggling!

ROFL! I've experienced several shakes here, over 35 years. Gosh, there must be 5-6 total. One was actually pretty bad.

How many blizzards in that time?

Uh huh.

Y'all can keep the cold, brother. 😉 Fun to visit, rough to live in.

$5 says I end up livin' in such within the decade, though. Been here too long. Itchin' to live elsewhere. Maybe after this current startup pays out...

Even then, I'll move to Canada before I do the midwest again. I cross the Sierras, I likely ain't stoppin' 'til I see the Atlantic. Canada is my exception for good reason. I'd take the freeze if the right woman was involved in the stayin'-warm part. 😉

Loved the original post.. reminded me of home. I am surprised to see how many of you are NY'ers. Anyone know Cobleskill? Born and raised there and on my way to visit tomorrow.

The main difference between east coast and west coast is that at least we always can count on getting dumped on with snow (and therefore prepare for it).. the unknown is what tends to scare you, don't you think? :wow:

Toronto...

Try Toronto my left coast friend....I think you'll find your journeys end there. Not to mention you'll be within range of all those Upstate 'lees! Q

<g> Suddenly, Dave2112 comes t'mind, 'cause I feel like I'm havin' folks try t'sway me t'the dark side!

Venraya, LIFE is an unknown. Fear is only an animal indicator to teach you to respect that which is outside of your control. I don't sweat what I can't control. No point in it. Like you folks prep for snow, you won't find a lot of Californians with heavy stuff on high shelves, etc. Given that there's so few of these shakes, the only way I'll fear it is WHILE it's happenin'. Once past, life is life, y'know?

Q, I've a different target, but it's based on a who, not a where. It's wishin', but it makes me smile, brother.

Upstate DOES have somethin' I miss, though. Proper fall turnin' o' the leaves. Evergreen trees everywhere DOES have a disadvantage. It's difficult to SEE fall happen here. Some of the leafy trees are JUST starting to turn, and it's freakin' November. One o' my finest memories is of crossin' over into upstate NY from Manhattan in a rental car in September, way back when. The colors were phenominal. Made magic seem more viable, somehow. Miss that every fall, now, like a love lost. When I'm rich, I'm just gonna fly out every year in fall to cruise from Manhattan to Buffalo and see the that again. Then I'm flyin' back here. 😉

Speak up...

I would gladly have sent you a set of panoramic digital pics bud! It was gorgeous beyond compare this year...the whole process was slowed and extended by a nice Indian summer effect, (still going on..it hit 70 today). I really think I saw 2 or 3 new colors, and the range was exquisite! Best part was that I'm moving this month so i didn't have to rake...lol...let 'em blow! Q

Great list, Q! I have spent a lot of time upstate and found the first one to be particularly true!
