I know the audience for this bit of advice may be limited but I suffered with this problem for so long that it's worth it to post the solution just in case someone else has had this problem as well.
I have a big hard drive but I partitioned the daylights out of it (11 partitions). I left 5 gigs for my OS (drive C) which I thought would be more than enough. But for the last few months I've had a ton of problems with "you are running out of space on Drive C" errors. I never install any programs to Drive C so other than deleting temporary internet files (for the few times I use IE) there wasn't much I could do.
Anyway...long sotry short (I know, too late) I finally found the solution. There is a file in the root C: directory called "hiberfil". It is equal to the size of your RAM which in my case is 704 megs which is like a fifth of drive c! No wonder Im running out of space! Seriously Ive gotten error messages that said "You have 0k on drive C"
sheesh
So anyway you can't delete the file manually. You have to go into Control Panel/Power Settings/Hibernate and uncheck the enable hibernate box. It's a thoroughly useless function but for some stupid ass reason it is turned on by default and sucks your hard drive dry.
So there you go. My tip of the...um...year. Im not very helpful am I. 🙁
Check it out even if you're not running out of hard drive space. Worse thing that happens is you free up a schload of drive space.

Thanks, Ness. 😀

This will definately give a helping hand to my tiny 20 gig hard drive.

Hiberfil is always ON by default when you install Windows XP. Its purpose is to save on power consumption, store info and system state while hibernating so you do not lose data from a crash. Many times, it may take 30 mins or so to copy data to one drive or burn a movie to DVD. While this is happening, XP hibernates to save on power and prevent data loss if the system should crash during that time. It is helpful but not necessary so just make sure you leave the "Enable Hibernate" box unchecked.

It seems to have changed that option for all 3 users on my computer but just a reminder to check all users to make sure the option is diabled.
Glad to be of help to at least 1 person! It's been such a PAIN to keep running out of space like that. 🙂

if you dont wanna have this problem leave at list 5 gigs of space from your hard drive
specialy if you have too many partitions.
put he rest of the staf in another hard drive and let the drive c with at least 5g free of space u dont need to b thinking to much with your space avalable n your pc

When I set up this hard drive to put XP on it I used a 5 gig partition for XP and I thought that was way overkill. I use another partition for program instalations (and get another for games) and I never installed anything further to drive C. Without hibernation turned on 5 gigs in more than enough but with it turned on you'll need at least 6 or 7 gigs. For a damn OS!!! No comments from the Linux people!! 😛
I also use a 5 gig compleyely empy partition for virtual memory and photoshop scratch disk so if you're using drive C for virtual memory you'll need even more space.

instead of doing all that

i pitched in $100us to buy an 80gig external

awesome
