Topeka — Fred Phelps Sr., the 84-year-old founder of one of the most-hated churches in America, died early Thursday, according to family members.

Daughter Margie Phelps says Fred Phelps died shortly after midnight Thursday, according to The Associated Press. She didn't give the cause of death or the condition that recently put him in hospice care. WIBW 13 News in Topeka reports that Phelps' son, Tim Phelps, said his father died in the night. The Topeka Capital-Journal has Shirley Phelps-Roper, the late Phelps' daughter, confirming that account.

Earlier this week, the senior Phelps was placed in hospice care.

Since 1991, under Phelps' direction, the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church has held anti-gay demonstrations that would eventually include picketing the funerals of soldiers and praying for the death of more.

A spokesman for Westboro Baptist Church said Sunday that Phelps was being cared for in a facility in Shawnee County, Kan. Spokesman Steve Drain declined to identify the facility or to characterize Phelps' condition.

"I can tell you that Fred Phelps is having some health problems," Drain said. "He's an old man, and old people get health problems."

Westboro Baptist, a small group made mostly of Phelps' extended family, inspired a federal law and laws in numerous states limiting picketing at funerals. But in a major free-speech ruling in 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the church and its members couldn't be sued for monetary damages for inflicting pain on grieving families under the First Amendment.

I'm not american, and I'm sure I'm not the only non-American to feel good after this news. Good hell Mr Hate - if such a thing exists, of course.

I hope his Funeral gets Picketed.

So they can see how it feels.

Veterans ought to picket his funeral and chant, "Phelps roasts in Hell."
The next day, they ought to return with dogs to shit on his grave.

I like the way you think Sir.

I hope that fucking dick suffered before he died.

Normally I wouldn't advocate the death of another human being because then that makes me as bad as they are...

...but FUCK THAT GUY.

I'm embarrassed to say.. either my head was isolated.. or until last night.. I don't remember hearing about Phelps. Jim Gardner talked about him on last night's 11pm WPVI newscast.

Based on what I heard, Phelps was a miserable human being, intolerant of any decent freedoms, or alternative lifestyles, acting like he was the judge, jury, and God.

Based on those principles.. all of which are completely against anything I stand for.. as I believe in freedom of choice for all people, I don't mourn Phelps passing.

Edit: I just read more about him. He hated Gays, and protested at their funerals. Who the fuck was he to tell other people how to live their lives, and how to persue happiness? If someone wanted to be gay, who was he to judge, unless their actions affected him?

After seeing that.. if there is in fact a Hell, and a man in a little red suit with horns,. may Mr Phelps meet him with such.. as retributions for his evil actions,. deeds, and thoughts.

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall in the afterlife. When Phelps woke up expecting to be in heaven, I'm sure he's surrounded by the angels of Lucifer in Hell trying to justify his actions.

For those who don't iknow who he is, I read an article about his death and didn't know that he was a lawyer before he founded his "church". He was basically reviled by the ABA for the way he practiced law and disbarred. I guess he decided to become a minister so that he air his opinions without retribution. He was willing to do anything to make his message heard and figured the way he could do that is to live the life he did. I think that is why he started protesting the funerals and "celebrating" at military funerals, so that he could spread his own brand of religion that stated God hated gays. The reason that they protested the military funerals was to get across his message that the reason for the soldiers' deaths was it was God's "answer" for the views the US takes toward the gay and lesbian lifestyle. The bigger the stage, the more he fought to air his views, which is why he protested government conventions, and wanted to protest the Oscars this year. He wanted to be judge, jury and executioner.

Needless to say, I doubt most people with good consciences viewed him as a bitter old man who was trying to get people to buy into his brand of hate. I say good bye and good riddance.

The sad thing is, it doesn't die with him. His followers will probably pick up his cause and carry on.

I think the WBC doesn't believe in worshiping the dead, so they're unlikely to hold a funeral for people to picket. (Might also be a reason why they won't hold a funeral due to the possibility of picketing.)
As for me, I'll do my best to forget this man in hopes that his memory dies in obscurity. I also made a small contribution to the local LGBT advocacy group.
I also thought this was a nice touch.

Really good point.

But I can see people picketing in front of their Home

I like that Pic of the Empire State Building, really nice touch 🙂

Barbershopman makes an excellent point about what is the most important aspect of this whole saga. As he said, Phelps is gone, and hopefully roasting in Hell. The most important problem.. are the people who follow or "Worship" his evil teachings, and carry those forward in their lives, and try to pass them on to others lives.

The guy was harmless, he had no power, he was just a convenient punching bag for a collective group of cretins on the left and the right. I had no use for the guy.
