The first ripe home grown tomato came out of my garden on June 30th. This wouldn't be a big deal back where I'm from originally, but around here, folks tell me that's pretty good. The warm winter certainly helped - especially that freakishly warm spell in March-April - but it still gave me a little something to chat about at last night's July 4th party.... Everything else is coming in pretty early, as well, and it looks to be a great gardening season ahead.

We have a saying about the corn: "Knee high by the 4th of July", however the corn is chest high in most places.

I've had several salad counts of cherry tomatos, sweet bell peppers, and broccoli. It mat be a great season after this hot spell is over.

Yeah,.... this is sort of "phase 2" of a 3 season plan for me. I've already had 120 snow pea plants to produce and play out,.... some 10 sq ft of spinach grown & harvested already,... even some green beans. Currently, in addition to the tomatoes, I'm starting to get peppers, okra, cucumbers and squash. I really made a big push this season - had everything growing indoors for a long while before setting out,.... The cucumbers and squash will be followed in turn by more peas and spinach - phase 3.

I was wondering if you started your tomatoes inside.

I have a perfect south-facing window in my kitchen which I framed out about 18" into a parabolic shaped "greenhouse" for starting seedlings. It's great for that, plus it heats the kitchen in the winter.
