I just came in from ditch digging.....ummmm....I mean gardening. It DID feel like ditch digging today, though. I was digging out the older dirt around our patio and tossing it down the back slope to build up where it's been washed out over the years. I shored things up with logs from the trees we dropped last spring. I'll be filling back in with fresh topsoil tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

Anyway, all that fun made me wonder if there were any others in the gang who enjoy gardening. We have limitted space to work with here, being in a condo unit. So, mine is more limitted than it would otherwise be. We trade off room for the security of very nosey neighbors and not having to mow a lawn. 😉

I still have enough room for my favorites, though...tomatoes, zucchini and sugar snap peas. I may even throw in some green peppers if I have room left. Along the sides of the patio, where it doesn't get much sun, I'll be putting in a variety of leafy ground cover. Then, of course, we'll have the azalias hanging on the fence posts and roses next to our statue. If I find something I like, I may do another larger potted plant out front.

If things come up well, I may even have some fresh veggies for us to pick on at the gathering!

So, what about everyone else? Any other gardeners out there?

Ann - of the *kinda* green thumb

Ann...

I just moved into a new house, and I have 1.4 acres of ungardened land...anytime you'd like to indulge your gardening instincts, just hop onto the PJ Ferry and getcha self over here! I put in about 20 junipers last week, and I'm sick of the entire thing already! Not to mention that it's still cold over here! Not looking forward to "developing" the rest, especially those endless flats of annuals that wives always seem to want...:wow: Q

i'm not much for gardening..i dont think its in the genes..i remember when i was a kid my mom could kill a cactus..so plants did'nt stand much of a chance...i remember one thing though..we had a garden one year and planted cherry tomatos...trust me..one plant of cherry tomatos is enuf..i think we had like 5 or 6 and we fed the nieghborhood all summer. 🙂

Heck Yeah I'm into Gardening.

We're in the process of redoing my entire backyard right now. Trees have been pruned, new lawn soon, vegetable garden and a storage shed coming too.

That will go along with all the other work we've done to the house this year. This is the year of updating my house. New plumbing, new wiring, new double paned windows, new paint inside, new garage door, new kitchen floor and even new tile in the bathroom. But with all that work inside... I'd rather be gardening. LOL...

:sowrong: Q...How could you teaseme like that?! I have half a mind to come down there, plant up your entire yard (barefoot) and then burry you out there for the little lady to have some fun with! I sure hope she has some good torture in mind! 😀

Ann

Prime....we had 4 cherry and 7 beefsteak last year. We shared with the neighbors too! LOL I think I may do some canning this year if we get as great a results as last year.

Ann

QB....I guess nobody can call you guys lazy! It sounds like you have a full plate! I enjoy remodelling, etc. as well. But, it's the outdoor stuff that I like the most.

Not happening...

It's a nice thought Ann, but my wife, although a wonderful woman, is not "one of us", and is basically puzzled by tickling and assorted fetishes that complement it...so, guess we'll just have to wash those dirty feet ourselves when you're done stomping around here..hehe. 😉 Q

mmmmmm..tomatoes.........

For Chrissake, don't plant zucchini! We did one year. By summer's end, we were putting it in paper bags, leaving it on neighbor's porches, ringing the bell and running like hell. Better you should plant egg plant. I hear that Q has a delicious recipe...

green i love gardening....my parents have a good sized yard and made a little rose arbor area for my birthday a couple of years ago....got beautiful roses from it. we normally have a ton of tomatoes and cucumbers and peppers(sweet and hot). and ugh zucchini.

AHHH...Gardening...I knew I loved this place.

ANN!! Great thread idea!

I've been cultivating my little sprigs in a window box to move into the "herb garden" soon and with the help of my brother, aka Super Gardener Man, I've been able to keep up my early spring plantings.

I've got pecan trees that are leaving gifts all over the yard..and I tend to rescue what the squirrels can't eat..lol. You want to talk about giving away the "fruit" of labor!! Sheesh..how many nuts can two trees grow???

Besides things munchable, I'm INSANE for tulips and lilies. They dot my entire landscape! I don't have a "finely manicured" yard. It's more of the wildflower look with a variety of color and height all over the front and back...mostly an azalea heaven!

Now, to get the hammock hung, the little lemonade table set up...and I'm ready for summer!

Joby, who's waiting for one irritable Brit to jump into this "hippy" thread! Nice to see I'm not the only one who digs the green things! LOL

LOL....I know how much zucchini you can get, having planted it many times. We had three plants last year. I plan on 5 this year. Besides the fact that we love zucchini stewed, fried, grilled, in bread, in lasagna or any other way we can come up with, we have plenty of elderly neighbors who love it and are unable to plant their own. SO, if we get overrun, it won't be a problem. 😀

Mmmmmmm! Drooling at the thought of grilled pizza with fresh zucchini and tomatoes. I can hardly wait!

As for the eggplant....it's all yours. It has never agreed with me.

Zucchini another fetish

Right out of the garden. A medium hot skillet with small amount of olive oil and lots of garlic. Slice about 1/4 inch, brown and add to sauteed onions. Do not burn or the garlic will turn bitter. Mix with spaghetti(plain, no sauce) and a good virgin olive oil in skillet to combine flavors. Fold in gently so as not to damage the zucchini. Top with Romano cheese. INCREDIBLE, almost as tasty as some loving toes, but not quite.

I don't know why he does it Ann, its made of concrete fs 🙂
And rock-plants don't like being watered i'm told

Hot /dry?

He may be attempting to keep it from cracking...if you live in an arid climate, popular lore has it that this will help...beats me whether or not it's true though. Q

Latest accomplishments...

Well, I got the inner areas filled in and spread the mulch. I also got our hanging baskets...coral impatiens. I'll most likely be planting the ground-cover along the sides next weekend and the veggies right before leaving for NEST.

I think I'll make it easy on myself this year, and buy my fresh veggies from the old farmer with the roadside stand. BTW, if you've ever wondered where the term "redneck" came from, just look at him. He's at least 70, and has been sunburned so many times over his lifetime that his face, hands and neck are colored magenta.
