I saw just a few minutes ago that there is a brother and sister in germany who are trying to fight for their love for each other. They are blood relatives and they face jail if they keep fighting for their love, like they want to be married. What i would like to know if the wise people here on the forum agree or disagree, and maybe some in depth opinions on it.

My opinion is that even though in first view it is really quite creepy just to imagine that. I mean falling in love with my sister........... That is something that nightmares are made of, for me.
But if i wanted to look into it in a different way i would say that at the end of the day, they are human beings and therefor can be seen as ok. But that is a view i cannot imagine for myself to do that :dead:

As you say, they are human beings. And if they are TRULY in love, instead of many other people out there who do it for the publicity, then by all means, allow them to tie the knot.

It's really a society thing. Society says it's 'icky', for lack of better term, for blood relatives to get married. Of course, there are biological reasons why it's not recommended to get it on with blood relatives. Brothers and sisters, for example, share a LOT of the same DNA... (Er, forgive my lack of termonology here... I haven't seen enough CSI yet). 😛 Therefore, if you and your sister had a child, that child would most likely end up with birth defects, etc. That's the EXACT same reason why a lot of pure bred animals have major birth defects. (A great deal of pure-breds are actually inter-family mating).

But the point of my usless ramblings is thus: if you love each other enough, tie the knot. If other people try to stop you, then society has already brainwashed them and you can't help them, anyway.

There were times when society saw the practical reality of a situation as more important than someone's emotions. When everyone in a tribe was highly dependent on everyone else, and everyone's decisions affected everyone in a real way. It is easy to look down on this kind of society when you get everything you need from a shelf and a shopping cart, and don't have to know anything about how it got there. People often talk about modern "consumer society," and mean it in a bad way, but it really does describe how the system we depend on is set up: so that we can ignore most of it. I would argue that only in such a system will anyone be tolerant of a relationship like this.

The incest rule dawns from practicality:

1) It diminished the rivalrynumber for the same girl.
2) Small enclosed societies: Incest would lead there a lot to inbreeding.
3) Rule for aristocracy imposed by the Church... similar reasons.

Basically the motivation is to avoid rivalry and genetic flawed offspring.
Times have changed off course but i'm wether the limitations is good or bad i'm not touching with a 50 foot stick 😛

I saw that too. They are blood siblings, but never met until their late teens, I believe. The boy did some searching to find his real mother and the rest is history. Ironic: I know people who were adopted who find the idea of doing their siblings just as foul as you and I do, and since this couple did not grow up as brother and sister, they don't feel it.
But they've had 4 kids, and 2 of them had birth defects of some kind. If deliberately bringing children into the world who are extremely likely to be deformed isn't a crime against society, I don't know what is.

The german criminal code prohibits in § 173, 2 sex between blood siblings. The penalty is an imprisonment up to 2 years.

The reason for this clause is, that children should should not be born with birth defects. These two have 3 common children (1 is from another man). Two if the children are mentally handicaped. They have lost the custody of these 2 children and the brother was jail for a few months.

I have no problem with the fact, that they love each. And I have no problem, if they want to live together for the rest of their life. But they should have no more children.

p.s.: I'm from Germany. And sorry for my bad english.

I completely agree with carpentarij. If two consenting adults love each other then nobdoy has the right to say they can't, but having children knowing most likely they will be either mentally handicapped or deformed, thats not right. they should just think that it's not possible for them to even have children together and adopt a child or even have a surrogate mother. Even though since i guess they already have 4 kids would they even want anymore now?

I suppose technically, like was said earlier, they are humans and everything, so in that sense (and in some countries, I'd imagine) it's okay, but I'd still be against it, if only for the birth defects in the children. It's one thing to say "well make it illegal for them to have kids" but let's be honest - who's going to stick to that if they're in love?

So yeah, good for them and everything, but it's just not fair. Let it still be a taboo. If the love is true they'll be together anyway. But if you encourage it you'll have a lot of hassle on your hands, as well as a lot of deformed kiddies.
