I just received a copy of the book written by Gloria Pall, the blonde actress who was tied up and tickled by Lee J. Cobb in the movie "The Brothers Karamazov." (The scene appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine on March 10, 1958, and the cover of LIFE is reproduced as the cover of her book.)

What I found even more interesting then her discussion of the filming of the scene itself was her description of how she was hired for the part.

She was among 50 tall blonde women who went to a "cattle call" at MGM to try to get a one day part in a scene with Cobb. Eight of them were told to come back for a second look. That day, three were eliminated, leaving five women, told to come back again, the next week. (She notes that the actresses, all desparate for even a small part, were not reimbursed for carfare for any of their three trips to MGM.)

All five women had to remove their shoes and stockings, and were tickled with a feather by the director (Richard Brooks) or a wardrobe lady. The others were "giggling mildly," but Pall "screamed with laughter" so that she almost went into convulsions. She got the part on that basis, because she had "laughed louder with more realism" than the others.

Pall notes that she wasn't acting; she really gets hysterical when being tickled.

The book comes autographed by Pall, with a small feather inside.

How many of you would like to have the job of testing the applicants for the next such scene?

Thank Daddy for that book!

Hey milagros317,

You can thank Daddy Longhair for that book. He told Gloria how she was a tickling "icon" for some of us that had seen that movie when we were younger. I can't believe I never bought that book all these years. Daddy did a lot for the community back in the Hotel Tickle era and I sure have never forgotten.

thank you to Daddy

Glad to receive the information about who got Ms. Pall to write the book. Thanks to Daddy! That movie scene did indeed inspire me as a child.

O yeah..DK couldnt be anymore right when he talks about the great job daddy did with Hotel tickle, as well as the tickling community. HOtel tickle was by FAR my favorite tickling site of its time. I hope somethin like that gets back up soon🙂

Yeah, Hotel Tickle was a great site....first tickling site I checked out, in fact. I still remember how in the upper left corner of the site, there was a pic of some REEEAAAALLLLY hot lady showing off her feet. Don't know who she was, but dammn. lol

As far as I'm concerned, Hotel Tickle was THE tickling site, kinda like how this place is THE tickling forum. If anyone can top these two places...nah, this place and Hotel Tickle can't be topped. 😀

Milagros, do you by any chance still have scans of "Tickled in Brothers K" by Gloria Pall? The site has been offline for years and the little book is nowhere to be found.

No, I never had scans of it, just one copy of the book.

Never read this account of the scene before. Thanks for posting

It would be great if someone who has the little book could scan it. It's been unavailable for many years, and it's a real piece of history.

You are all asking me to violate the laws about copyright, which lasts beyond the death of the author.
The copyright law of the United States grants monopoly protection for "original works of authorship".[1][2] With the stated purpose to promote art and culture, copyright law assigns a set of exclusive rights to authors: to make and sell copies of their works, to create derivative works, and to perform or display their works publicly. These exclusive rights are subject to a time and generally expire 70 years after the author's death or 95 years after publication. In the United States, works published before January 1, 1930, are in the public domain.

To be fair, that's also true of many of the images shared on this site every day.

If you're personally uncomfortable scanning and sharing an out of print book, that's of course your call. But it doesn't benefit Gloria Pall or her heirs for an unavailable story that no one can now buy to vanish and be lost forever. Many people only found out about the book after Pall died and it disappeared. They never had any chance to buy it.

I still hope that someone who owns a copy will preserve it for posterity.
