Happy Birthday, Jack Kerouac

Kerouac would be 90 today, Monday, March 12th. Had it not been for his literary voice, a lot of cultural movements and transitions might never have gotten off the ground. He is the father of the Beat Generation,... and quite possibly of the whole notion of a "counter culture."

I first read his classic "On the Road" in 1968,... I was 17 and the book was already ten years old, but it sure had an impact, not just on me, but on the millions who were picking it up around the same time. I believe it was the very next year that Kerouac died,.... too much fast living, but he made all his time count.

Happy birthday, Jack.

I've taught various English curriculum classes off and on since '75,.. mainly Shakespeare and Creative Writing,.. Thanks for picking up on this.

I was obliged to read "On the Road" by my high school English teacher in the 10th grade. She seemed to think it was great literature. I regarded it as rambling and self-indulgent.
